TVD’s 9:30 Club May Concert Calendar Preview… Part I

We can’t believe that May is being heralded in with still… more… rain. What about all that April showers bring May flowers crap? Despite being all “America, fuck yeah,” on Monday, we’re still feeling beat up from Sweetlife last weekend and gloomy about the weather, so we’re trying to find some way to bring a little bit of sunshine and happiness and kittens to the world… And lucky for you, dear readers, that is through more 9:30 Club ticket giveaways!

Once again, we have some many this month that we’ll be breaking up the preview into two parts. As always, we’ll have ticket giveaways later in the month for every show previewed. Hit us up tomorrow to find out the rest of The List. And here’s a hint… Hit us up even sooner than that if you like certain ex-Afghan Whigs singers. Hint #2: We may also have a reason for ’80s British post-punk fans to check the site tomorrow. That’s all we’re saying for now…

The Twilight Singers w/ Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, Mon 5/9

Former Afghan Whigs lead singer (and therefore indie rock god) Greg Dulli started The Twilight Singers as a side project back in the year Y2K. (You know, back when we all thought we should party like it’s 1999 because the world was about to implode.) The band released Twilight as Played by The Twilight Singers in September of that year. They’re currently touring in support of their recent release through Sub PopDynamite Steps, a fabulous white vinyl double LP.

Echo and The Bunnymen w/ Kelley Stoltz, Wed 5/11

If you love the ’80s as much as I do, you will remember “Lips Like Sugar,” “Bring On the Dancing Horses,” and “The Killing Moon.” While Echo and The Bunnymen’s last release was 2009’s The Fountain, they’re currently on a special North American tour where they will play their first two classic albums Crocodiles and Heaven Up Here before returning to the UK for a slew of summer festivals. The UK leg of the tour was last December. In the fall, they’ll commence another UK tour where they will be playing 1984’s Ocean Rain in its entirety.

The Reverend Horton Heat w/ Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Sat 5/14

The Reverend Horton Heat’s jams can be classified as “psychobilly,” and that’s exactly what it sounds like, country-punk-rockabilly, shaken, not stirred, with a twist of humor. The Reverend Horton Heat is both the alter-ego of Texan frontman Jim Heath and the name of his band, and birds of a feather seem to flock together: After touring with Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, The Reverend Horton Heat will embark on subsequent tours with Swingin’ Utters and then Nashville Pussy. Most fun sentence I have written in weeks.

Blackfield w/ Anathema, Wed 5/18

Alt rock duo Blackfield just released their newest album Welcome to My DNA last week and are starting off their North American tour in support of the album with their stop at 9:30 Club, after spending April touring extensively through Israel and Europe. The band is a collaboration between Stephen Wilson of the British prog-rockers Porcupine Tree and Israeli musician Aviv Geffen. From Geffen to his fans after their European tour: “We had such great and touching gigs during this last month, you became part of our DNA.” Aww.

White Lies w/ Asobi Seksu and Sun Airway, Fri 5/20

English post-punk rockers White Lies just released Ritual in January, and their dark, danceable, indie rock has frequently been compared to Joy Division, Editors, and Interpol. (Give ’em a listen… It’s remarkable.) They’ll be kicking off the US leg of their tour in support of the album in Louisville, KY later this month and are joined on tour with hard-hitting supporting acts such as Robert Randolph & the Family Band in Louisville, School of Seven Bells in NYC, and Asobi Seksu here in DC.

If you like going to 9:30 Club to see indie rock gods for free on Monday nights, you prolly want to check back here in an hour or so… Just sayin’.
