TVD’s 9:30 Club August Concert Preview

You know the deal. We preview the 9:30 Club shows you should be checking out. You can enter later this month for a chance to win tickets to each of them.

While District residents hope the temperature in August will drop, things are just heating up in the summer concert season. Check out some of the great shows presented by our friends at 9:30 Club, Merriweather Post Pavilion, and IMP coming to the DC Metropolitan area for August:

The 30th Anniversary Tour: Queensryche, Tues 8/9

Washington state-based Queensryche return to 9:30 Club with their American progressive metal sound. Having released Dedicated to Chaos in late June, the album marks the band’s twelfth studio album. The band describes the release as “a clash and slash of musical experimentation anchored by the pulse of digital code.” Queensryche will hit the District as part of their 30th Anniversary tour. Metal fans might want to pay attention to a very special perk that comes with these tickets… Maybe later today?

My Morning Jacket w/ Neko Case at MPP, Fri 8/12

Some may recall My Morning Jacket’s four-hour marathon set at Bonnaroo 2008; others may be keen on their classic American rock sound. Fresh off the release of Circuital this year, the band is embarking on a North American tour with indie rock goddess Neko Case of New Pornographers fame. According to Pitchfork, “a good MMJ concert can recalibrate your gut, it can change you—but it’s a remarkably solid step for a band that’s never stopped evolving.” Here at TVD, we couldn’t be more excited to see them live—oh and we’re pretty sure they won’t be walking off stage to have a beer and then cancel their entire tour… at least we hope not.

Bob Dylan w/ Drive By Truckers and Leon Russell at MPP, Tues 8/16

It is difficult to find a musician more political and poetic than classic American singer-songwriter, Bob Dylan. With a discography spanning decades, both new and old fans can look forward to an eclectic mix of bluesy melodies and soulfully textured undertones. The man with a musical history longer than a tour of the National Aquarium, and whom Rolling Stone cites as the “most influential American musician in rock & roll,” will roll into the Merriweather Post Pavilion as part of his North American Summer tour. We know we already gave away tix to this show, but… maybe, just maybe, we’re going to be feeling generous enough to give out some more? You’ll have to check back later this month to find out.

Thievery Corporation w/ The Arkives and The Funk Ark at Kastles Stadium at the Wharf, Sat 8/20

The popular DJ duo, Eric Hilton and Rob Garza are better known as Thievery Corporation, but really, they be classified as a “creative collective” for their diverse collaborations. These musical masterminds will once again play to their hometown crowd in Washington, DC at the Kastles Stadium by the SW Waterfront. This outdoor event is sure to please District residents as they perform in a new venue setting. Thievery Corporation is yet another group with a recent release, Culture of Fear, their sixth studio album, which stays true to form with their signature mix of “real instruments, electronic textures, and phrases,” as quoted in Paste Magazine. This show will serve as a warm up to the group’s West Coast tour this fall.

Ok metalheads, we’ve given you some big clues as to what we have up our sleeves this afternoon. Stay tuned, live hard, die young. \m/
