Luke Rathborne: The TVD First Date

“To me, vinyl records have always played a big part in how you listen to music.

I used to walk down to a little vinyl shop in my town in Maine or pour through the Salvation Army and flea markets looking for records. There was really nothing else to do. I remember I found a copy of Transformer by Lou Reed and couldn’t believe you could find stuff like that. Sometimes it was just some guy pulling all their records out of their garage and chucking them in the garbage.

My mom got me a Cat Stevens record, Teaser and the Firecat and that record makes me feel good. The song, ‘How Can I Tell You’ is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard.

The first time I got stoned was to the Bad Brains record—the self-titled one—and I had just gotten it. I must have been 12 or 13. There was a reggae track on the B-side. If I put that on, it still has some strange sort of effect.

When you’re a teenager records are ammunition against the rest of the world. When you’re in that space, looking at what an artist has given to you, you get a chance to get away from what’s going on around you. I hope that continues to exist out there, because people really need that. Records remind the people who need them that they can get out of a shit town or situation, and they can have something to dream about.” —Luke Rathborne
