TVD city number 17: TVD San Francisco. When I first heard we were getting a San Fran, all I could think was, GARAGE BANDS! GARAGE BANDS! GARAGE BANDS! It was like reliving Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival ’09 (San Franciscans Thee Oh Sees, Fresh and Onlys, Ganglians—ok, well they’re from Sacramento, but close enough—and a slew of other garage bands congregated under train tracks in Brooklyn on July 4th) all over again.
However, TVD San Francisco Editor Jason Miller assures me that there is oh so much more and that if we wanted to, we could have a “TVD Oakland” specifically just for garage bands. For instance, I had no idea that the metal and pop scenes were so developed in San Francisco, which makes perfect sense because both Metallica and Huey Lewis and the News hail from there. As I investigated further, I was astounded by San Francisco’s musical history, which I had naively thought was basically hippies from the ’60s like so:
But I was leaving so much out! Acronyms galore: BRMC, CCR, SMB. Grateful Dead! Faith No More! 4 Non Blondes! Primus! Dead Kennedys! Digital Underground! En Vogue! MC Hammer! Jefferson Airplane/Starship! Joanna Newsom! The musical landscape in this fair city stretches across genres like its famed Golden Gate Bridge.
We are so proud to welcome TVD San Francisco to the TVD Network. We know we’ll end up leaving our hearts there.
