JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD – Thursday, March 24th @ 6PM
2011 looks to be Jessica Lea Mayfield’s year. The acclaimed indie-folk singer-songwriter
just released her Dan Auerbach-produced sophomore album “Tell Me“. She’s playing Bonnaroo. Spin magazine just pegged her as “next big thing” (and they called her a badass!) Rolling Stone mag also named her as an “artist to watch” and claims “At 21, Mayfield looks like an ingénue but sings like a worldly-wise veteran, picking apart relationships with the sly eroticism of someone who’s lived a little…[Tell Me] is a disarming collision of stark country balladry, dynamic alternative rock and arty electronic pop.” Oh yeah, NPR has also done a feature on Jessica recently. What’s all the buzz about? Real, honest music from an uncompromising artist with vision. We’ll see you here on March, 24 for a taste and Jessica is performing later that night at Mercy Lounge for the full meal.

The COOLIN’ SYSTEM & MAGIC IN THREES – Saturday, March 26th @ 5PM
Record release party for the latest smash soul releases from GED Soul. It’s a cliche but this city is renowned world-wide for country music but those of us in the know are more than aware of how vital the rock scene is and always has been in Nashville. What’s even less well-known however is just how damn funky and soulful some of the bands are around here. GED Soul is a record label based in Murfreesboro dedicated to correcting that. They’ve released a whole bunch of 45s and a full-length by DeRobert & The Half-Truths on CD but now they’re unleashing 2 hot blasts of steaming soul & funk on CD and these are their first releases on full-length, long-playing vinyl. The Coolin’ System are arguably Nashville’s premier organ soul jazz titans. The self titled album features choice interpretations of deep cuts from some of the genre’s greatest heavy weights. Jack McDuff, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Eddie Harris and others get the “System” treatment on this soul-jazz tour de force recorded live in the studio in the spirit of a jazz recording.  The Magic In Threes is a collection of eccentrically crafted, smoked out, loced out psychedelic soul recordings featuring an all-star cast of G.E.D. Soul players, movers and shakers. The goal of this record was to simultaneously capture the essence of 70’s library music, and Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”. Over the course of the sessions, the album transformed into an amalgamation of styles from latin joints to melodious expeditions into mystical soul music. Both records drop on CD March 22 with vinyl to follow (hopefully by the Saturday!) and both bands will be transforming Grimey’s into a smoky jazz club for a hot second on a Saturday afternoon during beer:30 so don’t miss this one, folks. They’ll also bring the heat later that night at The Basement with even more friends joining in, like DeRobert.

COLD WAR KIDS – Monday, March 28th 6:30PM
Returning for their 2nd in-store performance at Grimey’s, we’re psyched to welcome Cold War Kids back! The last time around they were promoting their debut album “Robbers & Cowards” and folks were just starting to get hip to them. Now they return on the heels of their 3rd LP “Mine Is Yours” and everyone knows their blustering combination of angular indie, Southern soul, and bluesy rock, fronted by Nathan Willett’s powerful, passionate vocals. The new album was produced by Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Tom Waits) and Cold War Kids are in town to play a show at The Cannery Ballroom (advance tickets are available here for that too) and we got ’em for a free in-store performance earlier in the evening!

LANGHORNE SLIM – Wednesday, March 30th @ 5PM
Langhorne Slim is on tour with the Avett Brothers and has a off day so he’s heading to Nashville! He’ll be performing here at Grimey’s and then later at Mercy Lounge. He’s currently working on a new record so expect to hear brand new songs mixed with old favorites. One of the most endearing and standout qualities of Langhorne’s live shows is the sureness that one is always entering a genuine gospel-like musical experience full of little miracles. Seriously, his performances are magical so this intimate in-store is a don’t miss. It’s also an hour earlier than usual so make your plans to join us on March 30.

The APACHE RELAY – Monday, April 4th @ 6PM
We’re very pleased to welcome one of our favorite Nashville bands to launch their nationally-distributed new record! The Apache Relay’s “American Nomad” won’t be out until April 12th but we’ll have it here at the in-store so you can be the first on your block to show your love and support The Apache Relay by buying their new album. Were you lucky enough to see the secret house show that they played recently in town with Mumford & Sons?!?! If not, then make a point to join us and see what all the fuss is about. The band describe their sound thusly, “an amalgamation of rock and roll, soul, and roots music seen through the eyes of a bunch of indie rock kids” and they are a kick-ass live band. You’ll be converted before the end of the first song if you’re not already.
