TVD is tagging along with Girls Rock! DC this week and sharing the Rock Star summer camp experience almost in real time.
It’s Day #2, and a busy one at that…
Tuesday Schedule: On the second day of camp, the girls focus on “Exploring My Personal Greatness.” Recognizing and acknowledging that you’re awesome is a huge part of building self-empowerment and confidence. Each part of the schedule is built around that theme.
Girls Rock!DC Official Guide to Rock: Each camper receives an Official Guide to Rock, which includes everything from the schedules to chord charts to personal stories from women musicians about playing their instrument or performing in front of a crowd. This takes about 3 to 4 months to compile, edit and have printed for the first day of camp.
Lunch: Food is important to rocking hard. GR!DC provides lunch for any camper who qualifies for free or reduced lunch at school. GR!DC also provides a free breakfast and lunch for all volunteers EVERY day of camp. Securing donations and coordinating food pick up and drop off is a huge task for some special volunteers. So, non-musical folks and our bros, there is a place for you at camp!
Lunch Bands: Every day, campers are treated to a female-centered band or DJ crew performing a 30-40 minute set. Today, we had the all-female Go-Go band, Be’la Dona, and you can see, the girls pretty much had a party during their set. Highlights were covers of Beyonce’s “Who Run The World? (Girls),” Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How To Dougie,” and Keri Hilson’s “Pretty Girl Rock.” To close out their set, Be’la Dona invited some of the camper vocalists to the mic to sing Nicki Minaj’s “Moment 4 Life!”
Movement Workshop: There are three workshops every day. Today, campers are taking part in a Movement and Dance workshop. Let’s just say the final product incorporated the Moonwalk and the Charleston.
We’ll have more workshop coverage tomorrow!
