TVD Dallas: We’re Still Here!

Well, the weekend has come and gone and so has the so called Rapture. Surprised? I’m not. Whenever someone mentioned the rapture, the first thing that came to my head was not, what am I going to do in my final hours, but the melody of the 1981 hit “Rapture” by Blondie.

A lot of hip hop fans may think that Sugarhill Gang’s, “Rapper’s Delight” was the first number one rap single, but in reality Rapper’s Delight peaked at #36 on the US Pop charts and #4 on the US R&B charts. “Rapture” although not such a straight forward rap track reached #1 on the US Billboard charts and is also the first rap video ever to be shown on MTV. The fact that a new wave band was the first to have a rap video played on MTV is still kind of crazy to me. This song and video are a classic from the Man from Mars, cameos by Fab Five Freddy, Basquiat, and Deborah Harry dancing in the streets of the East Village. “Rapture” was an integral part in hip hop history whether people admit it or not.
