TVD Portland: My First Record with Stephanie Schneiderman

Enjoyed reading this My First Record coming from Portland, check it out and enjoy. -Steph

Stephanie Schneiderman, former member of the folk-pop trio Dirty Martini, has just released her 7th solo album, Rubber Teardrop. It continues in the downtempo sexy electronica vibe that she cooked up with collaborator Keith Schreiner on her previous effort Dangerous Fruit but manages to turn up the heat and the intensity throughout.

I grew up in a house full of music. I have two older sisters and when we weren’t practicing on piano, French horn, clarinet and flute, we played records. We had this tiny little record player with horrible sounding speakers that kept cutting in and out. The first songwriters that stood out to me were Paul Simon, Pat Benatar and Billy Joel.

I used to play the album Glass Houses for hours while roller skating around the perimeter of my (tiny) basement absorbing the melodies and lyrics. I think what pulled me in were the stories told in the songs and Billy Joel. I loved his bravado. I loved his voice. I loved his band. And if I hear that album now I can remember the smell of my basement.

Another album that made an impact on me was Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young’s So Far. I discovered it when I was about 14 and I couldn’t get enough of the harmonies and listened to the whole album over and over again. I liked the feeling that I was taken on a ride from the beginning to the end. And I was drawn to the darker melodies which I think influence my writing to this day.

Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After All These Years is still one of my all time favorite albums. It’s an album that my parents played a lot and my earliest musical memories involve being at the beach listening to it. His songwriting is clean and poignant and creates so much room to breathe. The melody lines become that much more potent because they’re surrounded by space. Every word feels important. And then there’s so much ease about the whole thing. Most of my favorite songwriters have these same qualities.

Pat Benatar was and still is a huge inspiration for me. I’m part of the generation of young girls who stood in front of their mirrors singing her songs trying to emulate her foxiness. In The Heat Of The Night was the album I listened to a bunch. She brought such a different angle to rock and roll, a more feminine but equally bold approach. Her songs were punchy little gems and so easy to sing along to. I recently had the opportunity to open for her this last summer, and she’s still amazing.

TVD Chicago: Happy 100th Birthday Robert Johnson

Happy Birthday Robert Johnson, from TVD Seattle.

This past Sunday would have been the 100th birthday of one of the most notorious figures in American music, Mr. Robert Johnson. Though he never made it big before his untimely death in 1938, at the age of 27, allegedly after drinking whiskey that had been poisoned by the jealous husband of a woman Robert had been flirting with, Johnson penned tunes that would become blues standards, and influence musicians for decades to come.

Countless musicians cite him as an influence, and his songs have been covered by everyone from Cream to The Rolling Stones to Led Zeppelin.

Legend has it that Johnson’s talent stemmed from a deal with the devil himself, made at a crossroads outside Cleveland, Mississippi. Whether you believe this or not, there is no doubt the man could play some serious blues.

TVD Seattle: Interview with 55thandBrooklyn at Top Secret Location

55thandBrooklyn is a hip hop/rock group composed of five friends who came together at the University of Washington to jam and have been playing together in various groups ever since. After seeing them play live, it was apparent that each of the band members come from different musical backgrounds. This aspect of a band, in my opinion, can be one of the biggest driving forces in creating really good and unique music.

Each member of the band brought something different to the table and as a group, 55thandBrooklyn is able to blend the styles seamlessly to create quality tunes. There was never a dull moment in their set and they definitely know how to have a good time with their music. If I can tell the band is thoroughly enjoying themselves when playing live, it is the cherry on top and makes me appreciate their music that much more.

I got to hang out with the band for a bit after their practice last week to have a quick chat and to ask them some questions. Check it out:

TVD: How did 55thandBrooklyn come together?

55th (Peter Muller): Whitney and I have been playing together for about four years. As memebers of HMC (Husky Music Community) there was a lack of opportunities at UW for student musicians, it is hard to find gigs, places to practice, and other resources. Musicians in our fraternity would play in our jam room so we started to play shows there and played as the house band. Some of the HMC artists were featured in The Daily (UW student newspaper) and started getting more attention that way. 55thandbroklyn started as a blog with electronic looping, a lot of the songs we play today started with those old tracks.

55th (Whitney Killian): The songs on the blog started really digitalized and we have worked on translating them into more of a live sound.

TVD: What do you see in the future for the band?

55th (Peter): Music would be fun to do as a career but for right now we do it because we love it. We don’t just want to make the music that the industry wants to hear. We are student musicians and not music students which makes it more difficult. With possible changes within the band, there will eventually be more synthesized drums.

A favorite nugget from Seattle Record Store Day 2011

I just came across this Record Store Day 2011 gem and love it! A perfect combination of some of my favorite things – The Head and the Heart, Easy Street Records, Sonic Boom Records, KEXP and Record Store Day. I think my favorite part of the video is at 4:12 where a little girl is singing along with her eyes closed, so cute I could die! Enjoy.

Vinyl Giveaway! Mike Watt + TVD: Across the Country Together

TVD is hitting the road with Mike Watt + The Missingmen on their North American “hyphenated-man” Tour in support of Mike’s brand new LP, hyphenated-man.

In each city Mike plays where there’s an affiliated TVD, we’ve got an opportunity for one of you to win the aforementioned “hyphenated-man” on vinyl in exchange for your comment to the contest posting. Let us know why you deserve to win Watt’s latest vinyl opera and the most convincing of the bunch will find the LP in his or her mailbox.

For the very last in our ten opportunities to win the new LP, Mike Watt + The Missingmen play at The Triple Door tonight, 4/27! You have one week from today to be sufficiently convincing in the comments to be awarded the record. Comments from a previous hyphenated-man giveaway will still be considered for future ones. Winners must have a mailing address in the continental US or Canada.

Mark Fagan of TVD Austin spoke with Mike in advance of the tour:

Mike Watt’s rock & roll résumé is as impressive as they come. His legendary career began with the Minutemen in 1980 alongside guitarist D Boon and drummer George Hurley which ran until the tragic car accident in December 1985 that took D Boon’s life. He then started fIREHOSE with Hurley and Ed Crawford which existed from 1986 to 1994, and has played bass for the legendary Stooges fronted by Iggy Pop for the last eight years. And those are just a few highlights from his storied career.

He’s back in support of his newest solo album and third opera, hyphenated-man, which features Watt on lead vocals and, of course, holding down the low end on electric bass with his signature flowing style that has inspired and influenced fellow bassists for decades. Interestingly, he actually composed hyphenated-man on D Boon’s Telecaster instead of the bass as per his usual practice.

Due to the growing backlog of projects, Watt decided to start his own label—clenchedwrench—and hyphenated-man has the honor of being the first release from this new imprint. The Vinyl District had a chance to chat with Mike before he hit the road.

A BUNCH OF LITTLE THINGS MAKE ONE

TVD: I read that hyphenated-man is inspired by the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. Can you go into further detail on this?
Watt: … [The documentary film on the Minutemen] We Jam Econo, have you heard of this?

TVD: Oh, certainly.
Watt: Ok, [hyphenated-man] was being made about the same time these cats Keith [Scheiron] and Tim [Irwin] asked me to help them. So I hadn’t listened to Minutemen in a long time because of sadness – with D Boon – but I had to hear it, ya know, for this thing. They wanted me to do a spiel and drive ’em around town. But hearing it was it was like, “Wow, I kinda like this little thing.” [Watt laughs] Ya know, no filler. I wanna work again with this kind of thing. I mean we got the idea from the English band called Wire, Pink Flag. But I still like the way ya know George [Hurley], Boon, and myself went and did this. I wanted to do it again. It struck a chord in me, a resonance in me. Mr. Bosch used all these little things to make one big thing.

Minutemen kinda did that with a record or a gig ya know, a bunch of little things make one. That’s where I kinda found a little parallel. So, in a way I went back to my old days, but then in the opera form. … I was also thinking of this other angle, as far as the middle-aged thing goes. Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz. I don’t know the intention of the writer, it was a man, L. Frank Baum. I don’t know his intentions. But my take is like, you notice that that tin man and scarecrow and lion, they’re the farm hands.

Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses EMP Opening

This last Friday I had the very rare opportunity to attend the new Nirvana exhibit at the Seattle Experience Music Project before it was open to the general public. I wasn’t really too sure what to expect, seeing that I’ve never been to a VIP event like this, but the experience I walked away with was something I’ll not soon forget. I was a mortal in the midst of rock gods, surrounded by the people that created the Seattle Sound 20 years ago. Members from Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Fastbacks, and Young Fresh Fellows were in attendance, along with co-founder of Sub Pop, Bruce Pavitt.

I was elated to find the attendees all viewing this exhibit in a positive light. It would be easy for this exhibit to bring back a lot of difficult memories and grief to those who knew Kurt on a personal level. Rather everyone saw it as was a way to celebrate one of Seattle’s most respected bands. The exhibit itself is a lot smaller than I was expecting, but still was very impressive. Hand written notes by Kurt, different articles of clothing worn by members, instruments, rare personal photos, and different artwork from the band.

Right before leaving I went into the Sky Church where a slide show of different Nirvana photos was playing, along with DJ’s spinning different songs from the era. There were easily 300 people all standing watching this slide show, all in awe, still fascinated by what was Nirvana, and what they meant to Seattle. Twenty years later, we still love Nirvana, and that will never change. I’ve never experienced anything this moving in the music world, and I don’t expect that I will have the opportunity to again anytime soon. Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses is open for viewing now through April 22, 2013 at the EMP, and is a must for any Seattle music fan.
