TVD Recommends: Pitchfork Music Festival: Day 3, 7/15

Last but not least, Sunday boasts a great line-up of bands, with Vampire Weekend headlining in the evening. After two days of non-stop festivalling, as well as the numerous after-parties held by local venues, we hope you’ve got the energy to make it out to Day Three.

Milk Music | 1:55PM | Blue Stage

Fresh off a European tour in support of their debut EP Beyond Living, Milk Music bring their brand of mid-90’s pacific-northwest rock to Pitchfork ‘s Blue Stage Sunday afternoon. Hailing from Olympia, PA and picking up where bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Husker Du left off, Milk Music’s debut sounds like an old grunge favorite right from the start.

Singer/Guitarist Alex Coxen tries to stray away from the obvious comparisons to the Seattle sound of the 90’s hoping to transcend the “grunge” label and make something different. Coxen’s howling vocals and screaming guitar solos deliver a sound that is both fresh and retro all at once.

With only a simple website, and no Facebook or Myspace pages to speak of, Milk Music can be a bit difficult to stumble upon but well worth searching out. For the moment, their 21 minute EP is the only material you’ll be able to find from these guys, but a cassette release of a session recorded at New Jersey’s WFMU will be released this summer and a full length album is in the works for next spring. They’re sure to put on a great set Sunday on the Blue Stage at 1:55 and the following Monday when they play the Subterranean. Don’t miss these guys.

Thee Oh Sees | 2:50PM | Blue Stage

Falling somewhere between garage and psychedelic rock, Thee Oh Sees will bring their energetic brand of music to Pitchfork’s Blue Stage on Sunday. November of 2011 marked their most recent release, Carrion Crawler/The Dream, preceded that year by its pop-leaning counterpart, Castlemania. Their output is impressive, releasing 10+ albums alongside an arsenal of EPs and 7-inches.

This five-piece outfit, originally started as a solo break for vocalist John Dwyer, is energetic and eccentric. Unlike what one would expect from a typical garage rock band, Thee Oh Sees play with great musicianship and a tight live show, according to previous reviews. Dwyer’s vocals are raw and raspy with steady drums and tambourine holding each song together. Driving guitar melodies push Thee Oh Sees’ music forward while an assortment of other instruments (flutes, synth, keys) flesh out the rest.

Sunday’s full line-up is below. Now that Pitchfork is officially around the corner, what bands are you listening to to get pumped up? We’ve got a good mix of bands from all three days, including Purity Ring, Sleigh Bells, and Outer Minds, among many, many others. We’re looking forward to a warm, sunny, and music-packed Pitchfork weekend.

And pick up the app while you’re waiting!
