TVD Recommends: Pitchfork Music Festival: Day 1, 7/13

The opening day of Pitchfork boasts a great line-up of bands on three stages in beautiful Union Park, Chicago. With so many bands playing, it’s impossible to catch them all, so here are a few recommendations from TVD Chicago.

Outer Minds | 3:20PM | Blue Stage

Outer Minds is a local psychedelic garage rock outfit scheduled to start Pitchfork off on the Blue Stage. After releasing a modest amount of 7″ vinyl, a self-titled full length album debuted last March.

It’s hard not to get a little excited to see Outer Minds live when their songs online are so 60’s inspired and energetic, not to mention dripping with steady tambourine beats and organ melodies. Led by Zach Medearis, Outer Minds is rumored to put on a fantastic live show.

Dirty Projectors | 7:20PM | Red Stage

Passing through while touring this summer, Dirty Projectors is playing an evening set on the Red Stage. This experimental and eclectic project of David Longstreth’s began in 2002 and has continued to the present day, releasing numerous full-length albums, records, and cassettes.

With a short film on the horizon and Swing Lo Magellan just released, it’s safe to say that the sextet has lots of new material perfect for a winning performance at Pitchfork.

 Purity Ring | 8:20PM | Blue Stage

Choosing between Feist (also playing at 8:20) and electro-pop duo Purity Ring might be difficult, but it is a decision that is well-worth it. Playing the Blue Stage after Clams Casino, Purity Ring’s delicate electronic jams just cannot be missed.

Megan James’ vocals are soaring and ethereal, interwoven with synth beats, and sure to leave you with chills. This music is absolutely fitting for an evening performance at a summer music festival, and you can bet we will be right in the middle of the crowd enjoying every minute.

Purity Ring’s debut album, Shrines, arrives July 24th of 2012.
