Missed Something at Sasquatch? NPR To The Rescue!

I personally wasn’t able to make it to Sasquatch this year, a huge shame considering The Gorge is the only place I would like to spend Memorial Day weekend. Lucky for me NPR Music is providing us with archived sets from the entire weekend. Even better they are letting us download the recorded music. Maybe I’ll dedicate this weekend to having a belated Sasquatch of my very own. Thanks NPR!

TVD Seattle Supports Local Talent in Incubus Cover Contest

Incubus currently has a cover contest going on where they asked fans to cover their new single “Promises, Promises” given only the sheet music for the song. I was very pleased to find that the best video submission I have seen so far was created by a fellow Seattleite, I’m impressed!

This cover was recorded by Seattle native David Michael Frank along with Ben Klenz (drums) and Joseph Intile (bass). Don’t be fooled by the illusion of identical triplets playing alongside each other in this video. What we are really seeing is a multi-talented musician, David Frank, who is currently in the process of recording an original VideoAlbum. Stay tuned for more information on this upcoming album.

Only the submissions with the most views will be considered for the contest, so be sure to check it out and support local talent.

Download this cover of “Promises, Promises” for free and be sure to check out other covers by David Michael Frank on his Facebook page and his website.

TVD Seattle: Interview with 55thandBrooklyn at Top Secret Location

55thandBrooklyn is a hip hop/rock group composed of five friends who came together at the University of Washington to jam and have been playing together in various groups ever since. After seeing them play live, it was apparent that each of the band members come from different musical backgrounds. This aspect of a band, in my opinion, can be one of the biggest driving forces in creating really good and unique music.

Each member of the band brought something different to the table and as a group, 55thandBrooklyn is able to blend the styles seamlessly to create quality tunes. There was never a dull moment in their set and they definitely know how to have a good time with their music. If I can tell the band is thoroughly enjoying themselves when playing live, it is the cherry on top and makes me appreciate their music that much more.

I got to hang out with the band for a bit after their practice last week to have a quick chat and to ask them some questions. Check it out:

TVD: How did 55thandBrooklyn come together?

55th (Peter Muller): Whitney and I have been playing together for about four years. As memebers of HMC (Husky Music Community) there was a lack of opportunities at UW for student musicians, it is hard to find gigs, places to practice, and other resources. Musicians in our fraternity would play in our jam room so we started to play shows there and played as the house band. Some of the HMC artists were featured in The Daily (UW student newspaper) and started getting more attention that way. 55thandbroklyn started as a blog with electronic looping, a lot of the songs we play today started with those old tracks.

55th (Whitney Killian): The songs on the blog started really digitalized and we have worked on translating them into more of a live sound.

TVD: What do you see in the future for the band?

55th (Peter): Music would be fun to do as a career but for right now we do it because we love it. We don’t just want to make the music that the industry wants to hear. We are student musicians and not music students which makes it more difficult. With possible changes within the band, there will eventually be more synthesized drums.

Tonight at Lucid Jazz Lounge: Namaste Kathmandu Benefit Concert

If you didn’t catch the Fleet Foxes last night and don’t have tickets for tonight, I’m sure you are kicking yourself. And if you aren’t, you should be. I don’t have many words to describe the beautiful musical experience that went down at the Moore last night because it basically left me speechless. If you aren’t headed to the Moore tonight for round two, I have the best alternative.

Tonight at Lucid Jazz Lounge in the University District be sure to check out the Namaste Kathmandu Benefit Concert that will feature many University of Washington student musicians. Among many other talented musicians playing will be 55thandBrooklyn. Trust me, you don’t want to miss them! Stay tuned for more on 55thandBrooklyn and TVD Seattle’s interview with the band.

Not only will you catch some awesome music tonight at this benefit concert, but you will also be supporting a great cause. The $10 cover charge will be going towards Namaste Kathmandu which supports the Mechi Mahakali Primary School in Nepal. To put it simply, the money will go towards helping children get the education they deserve, how could you say no to that? For more information on the great things Namaste Kathmandu does check out their website.

Check out the Facebook page and Lucid Lounge’s website for more details on tonight’s event.

A favorite nugget from Seattle Record Store Day 2011

I just came across this Record Store Day 2011 gem and love it! A perfect combination of some of my favorite things – The Head and the Heart, Easy Street Records, Sonic Boom Records, KEXP and Record Store Day. I think my favorite part of the video is at 4:12 where a little girl is singing along with her eyes closed, so cute I could die! Enjoy.
