It’s a gloomy day here in Southern California—hard to believe, I know—so what better to do than heat up some hot schnochocolate (Peppermint Schnapps and hot chocolate) and sort out my weekend itinerary? Obviously we cannot tackle all of these events, but I sure as hell am going to try.

9.7.12 | I love free things! I love record stores! Amoeba has a knack for combining these two loves. Pop in Los Angeles’ favorite record store this Friday around 6p to catch a free show from Terry Malts. The modern punky group (think Buzzcocks, The Clorox Girls, The Descendents, etc.) will be playing tracks from their debut album, Killing Time, out now on Slumberland Records.

If you can’t make it to Amoeba, The Terry Malts will be playing later that night at The Echo with The Fresh & Onlys.

FYF might be this weekend, but instead of convincing you to spend 90 buckaroos on the two-day extravaganza, I am going to clue you in to some budget-friendly finds.

Maybe I’m just bitter. The Labor Day weekend festival is great and all… in fact, the only reason my groupie self won’t be there is because I did not receive a press pass. Boo hoo. Whatever. I watched David Cross on YouTube last night, anyways. Who needs him?!

But instead of moping about missing performances from the likes of Yeasayer, The Growlers, and Dinosaur Jr. (who are embarrassingly small-fonted on the lineup flyer), I will dive heavily into local shows and dollar beers. On second thought, the latter might be a tad messy…

And away we go!

Like clockwork, it seems that as the calendar starts ticking down on the summer days everyone tries to cram in as many events as they can.

This last Saturday was no exception in the greater LA area, for, in addition to the dozens of regular old Saturday-nightlife shows and soirees on, above, and underground, there were also at least two gloriously free music festivals highlighting local talent. While a few trips to a few bars in a few hours of the evening rendered Long Beach BuskerFest off the itinerary for the night, my latest ManBoy and I managed to soak in some tunes at Echo Park Rising that afternoon.

For those of you who don’t know, Echo Park Rising sprung up last year when city officials put the kibosh on the three-decade-old Sunset Junction street fair. Having now experienced both jubilees, I would say that this latest expression of art, music, and day drinking best mirrored the community.

There are bands that sound best when listened to in the comfort of your own home, lounging in yoga pants and sipping vino as the record spins; just as often, there are bands who flourish under stage lighting and eccentric, caked on make up. NOBUNNY is the latter.

Flashback to my night last Thursday. I’m driving at a generously steady pace on the 605, northbound towards The Glass House in Pomona, a venue that I have never actually been to before because it’s in, well, Pomona. Despite the fact that they lure in some insanely rad bands, nothing could motivate my lazy bum enough to take the hour trek. Not until tonight, that is, when NOBUNNY will be kicking off their Fall tour, with Pangea, Summer Twins, and Death Hymn Number 9 being dished as the night’s starting courses.

I finally get to the venue, late (per usual) and reeking of tequila because I can’t seem to find a flask without a leaking problem. By the time I get in, Summer Twins are on their last song. Cool. From what I heard, they were good. I’ve seen them before, though. Chelsea and Justine are consistently entertaining.
