Album Review: The O’s

The O’s will be playing a couple shows this week, Sons of Hermann Hall on Friday and at the Wildflower and Arts Festival on Saturday. They will be promoting their sophomore album, Between the Two. TVD Austin writer, Jessi Cape, breaks down the duo’s latest effort:

If Del McCoury and Conor Oberst had a lovechild, the bluegrass pop folk duo known as The O’s could be the auditory likeness. The sophomore album Between the Two (Idol Records) again wields guitar and banjo as weapons of choice for Taylor Young and John Pedigo, along with their signature well-matched and nicely twanged vocal harmonies. Adding a single kick drum, steel guitar, harmonica, and lowebro to the lyrics about life, love, and the pursuit of the party makes this album a success. The album ebbs and flows through a spectrum of emotions and life lessons like a mountain stream turned white water rapids whooshing by a late-night campfire, and back again. Tracks like the determined “Pushin Along” roll into the happy-go-lucky party “Everything’s Alright” and back to lovey dovey “Remember You”. Idiosyncrasies of the uniqueness that is the banjo are almost overshadowed by the smoothness of the mastering, but this actually serves to pique curiosity about their notoriously fun live performances. The O’s are headed to Austin in July, and TVD Austin will certainly have our eyes and ears peeled.

Also, make sure to check up on TVD Dallas this week. We will be giving away a few tickets to Friday’s show at the Sons of Hermann Hall.

Good Records In-Store: This Will Destroy You

Who needs vocals? I am a big of instrumentals whether it be a band, producer, or DJ spitting out the beats. There’s something about just letting the music speak for itself. Tonight, instrumental four-piece band, This Will Destroy You, will be bringing their dark and dense sounds to Good Records for an in-store performance. They will be promoting their new LP, Tunnel Blanket, which just dropped yesterday. So come on down and enjoy some good tunes, free food, and free beer. Can’t go wrong with that.

Good Records, 1808 Greenville Avenue @ 9pm

UPDATE: This happened yesterday Tuesday, May 10.

Homegrown is Always Better

This Saturday, the second annual Homegrown Music and Arts Festival is going down at the Main Street Gardens. This festival will feature some of the best music and art that the metroplex has to offer. There will be two stages, featuring 13 bands, live art demonstrations, local artists and galleries. This will be my first Homegrown festival and I am definitely down to checkout my new music scene.

The musical acts will include: Neon Indian, School of Seven Bells, Astronautalis, This Will Destroy You, Slobberbone, Ishi, Analog Rebellion, Gallery Cat, Burning Hotels, The O’s, Seryn, Grant Jones & the Pistol Grips Lassos, and Larry g(EE). A variety of different styles and genres of music along with some local art, should make for a good day of fun in the sun. Hope to see you there.

TVD: Live from the Big D

Well Dallas is joining the TVD family! The goal is to provide the low down on all the latest happenings music wise in Dallas. Whether it be local record store news, new releases, in-store performances, upcoming shows, or concert reviews, TVD Dallas will be the place to go. I had the honor of writing some blogs for TVD Austin and now that I am living in the Big D, why should Dallas be left out in the cold, or is it heat?

I have been in love with music for my entire life. I would say hip hop is my main girlfriend, but I have acquired an eclectic taste of music over the years. I have been a DJ for about ten years now and have been collecting vinyl for just as long if not longer. I have seen too many live shows to count. From Chuck Berry (when I was little lad) to The Roots (my personal faves), Elliot Smith, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, RJD2, and even Phish, just to name a few. I feel that there is too much good music out there that it is nearly impossible to only like one genre.

With that being said, I hope you visit this site daily and even contribute if you know of anything you think we should know about. With the help of my trustee intern, Dee, and a few other writers, we hope that TVD Dallas will not disappoint. See y’all soon. —Charles
