Festival Fast Talk
with The Rubens

It’s not uncommon for bands to travel “across the pond” to seek a standing in the States, but what of the ponds outside US Borders?

The Rubens are an Australian rock ‘n’ roll group well established in the Oceania territory. They are just now tearing through the States with catchy pop rock aimed at your this-song-is-now-stuck-in-your head gland. We chatted with The Rubens’ lead singer Sam Margin just before their showcase at Bonnaroo.

How’s this weekend been?

We saw JEFF the Brotherhood, saw a bit of Bjork, which was fucking cool.

This isn’t the first time in the States, correct?

No, we recorded our album in New York about a year and a bit ago at this studio called Avatar. David Kahne produced it and did a really amazing job. After that, we’ve come back a few times to do shows, or play south SXSW.

Festival Fast Talk
with Nicki Bluhm

Nicki Bluhm is a woman who is known to love, and known to love music—but more than just a simple story of music and a talented musician, Bluhm is soulful and slow-paced singer/ songwriter, well-versed in modern Americana.

Bluhm is often accompanied by her husband (famed songwriter in his own right) Tim Bluhm and backed by her band The Gramblers. Together, Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers are two albums deep in a blossoming career. We caught her at Bonnaroo to discuss songwriting, festies, and singing in the car.

When did you get here?

We got here [Thursday] and we played the opening set, then we played a VIP party today, then we’ve got one more party set, and then we have to be heading out. [We’re] playing Little Rock tomorrow.

You have a very warm, almost nostalgic sound. It’s very natural. What inspires you the most?

Tim and I listen to a lot of vinyl. The whole band does. I’m a fan of a lot of music from the ’60s and ’70s. Tim’s big influences are the Beach Boys and the Byrds, and I think the music from those decades reaches all of us and inevitably fuses into the music that we make.

Festival Fast Talk with JEFF the Brotherhood

When telling people you’re going to interview Jeff the Brotherhood, those who have already been around the guys usually have one of two things to say: One, that no one works harder, and two, that no band provides better company. So when the chance arose to talk to them at Bonnaroo, we quickly got on board to speak to the noisy pop duo.

As of the past year, the Nashvillian two-piece have been promoting their 7th record Hypnotic Nights with endless touring and festival gigging. We were able to speak to them about extended touring, their upcoming record, and a made-up men’s cologne someone out there will probably wish were a real thing.

How has this year been treating you guys?

Jamin Orrall: Wonderful.

Jake Orrall: Best year of my life.

Hypnotic Nights is your seventh record. Would you guys mind talking to me about the process of writing and recording it?

Jamin: It was very rushed. As all of our records are.

Jake: We tour so much we don’t have time to write songs, so we actually pulled a lot of songs I wrote when I was like 19. [Laughs] Yeah and you know just, wrote the other ones in like two weeks.

Jamin: Honestly, we kind of shat that record out.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Eleanor Friedberger at
U Street Music Hall, 6/27

Post-firing furnaces, singer/songwriter Eleanor Friedberger is coming solo to U Street Music Hall this Thursday evening and we’ve got a pair of tickets for you to attend her solo outing.

Since 2000, Eleanor Friedberger and her brother Matthew were known as the primary members of Fiery Furnaces. Although she’s been solo since a hiatus was called in 2011, Friedberger’s songwriting hasn’t slowed since the release of Last Summer in 2011 and the new Personal Record earlier this month. Drawing from aspects of the Furnaces, Friedberger makes jangly pop with straight-arrow arrangements and plenty of choruses.

Not to come alone, post-Here We Go Magic keyboardist Kristina Lieberson’s project TEEN will provide support.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Son Volt at the 9:30 Club, 6/20

If you’re looking for a down-to-earth show full of some slow-cooked Americana, this is just for you.

Country caravan Son Volt are coming to the 9:30 Club, and we’ve got a pair of tickets to giveaway. It’s crazy easy to get in the running, so if you dig on some hearty folk music, you’ve got no excuse to miss out.

Singer-songwriter Jay Farrar started Son Volt in 1994 after the demise of Uncle Tupelo, the alt-country band that also counted Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy as a principal songwriter. Through the mid- to late-’90s, Son Volt created a name for themselves with no-frills folk/country spanning an aesthetic gap from Bob Dylan to Crazy Horse.

TVD Recommends: Bonnaroo 2013

When flagship festivals as big as Bonnaroo come along, they’re always overloaded with so many acts that plotting out a schedule seems almost too easy, but heed this warning! If you only see the big names, you’re liable to miss some good shows.

Past the acts everyone knows to see like Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, R. Kelly, Bjork, The National, festival staples like Mumford and SonsWilco, Pretty Lights, and breaking acts like Lumineers and Action Bronson, there are names that seem to blend in with the overwhelming list of notables. So here are some obvious don’t-miss picks and a little bit of a peak-under-the-radar to see what can be good show you’re glad you got to see.

Though there are plenty B+ list bands to catch, there are a few especially worth being available for. The xx are a name you’ve probably heard for a few years now. Lead member and producer Jamie xx has built a sound that mixes American indie rock with English dance sentiments. The xx has properly defined the aesthetic with their sophomore effort, last year’s Coexist. In the same fashion as the recorded material, their live show works off of equal helpings of raw performance and expert production well worth checking out.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: The xx and Grizzly Bear at Merriweather Post Pavilion, 6/16

In a match made in indie heaven, The xx and Grizzly Bear have set up a string of dates to co-headline together. We’ve got a pair of lawn tickets to see the two bands at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. How can you get your hands them? It’s easy!

The quartet known as Grizzly Bear are busy enough in their own time, spawning all sorts of side and solo projects. When they get together to create their work, they build musical monuments to American folk, jazz, electronica, and psychedelia, all cleverly wrapped in a pop package. 2012 saw the release of the bands 4th studio album Shields. The effort bolsters a heady take on song composition backed by dense musicianship over a variety of instruments and sounds. The results lands Grizzly Bear with an even longer track list of songs that should be witnessed live.

The xx are known for a lean sound that sits somewhere between indie rock and english post-dubstep. Lauded for their restraint, The xx brings to light that it’s not always the notes you play, but sometimes it’s the ones you don’t. 2012 saw the release of their second album Coexist, a focused effort in minimalist composition fleshed out through reverberating guitars, gridlocked drum programming, and breathy vocals.

Hot off the Presses: Disclosure, Settle

If you haven’t been keeping up, Summer 2013 is the season of dynamic duos.

Not only did Mount Kimbie already release a fantastic effort in Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, Daft Punk released Random Access Memories, and Boards of Canada have the very much-anticipated Tomorrow’s Harvest just around the corner, but today brings with it the release of indie-dance darlings Disclosure‘s Settle.

The hyper young brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence (both ’90s kids) have built a sound based on a squeaky clean aesthetic, four-on-the-floor beats, and translucent arrangements. Commercial success was brought about by a select group of singles including “Latch (ft. Sam Smith)” and “White Noise (ft. AlunaGeorge),” both of which contain perfection in gridlocked swing and well-baited hooks.

Daft Punk’s highly anticipated Random Access Memories released today

HelmetsRAM

When discussing an interstellar spaceship manned only by modern electronic music’s musical elite, there’s no guesswork involved with what voice would be heard over the intercom saying “This is your captain speaking.” Of course it’d be none other than the funky vocoder stylings of Daft Punk.

The duo who pioneered digital disco are back yet again with today’s release of their highly anticipated 4th record, Random Access Memories. They’ve released a teaser video for the packaging, causing every lover of their catchy rhythms to drool uncontrollably.

Random Access Memories has been highly buzzed about through the past few months, and for good reason. Sans their original soundtrack to Disney’s Tron, it’s their first major effort in eight years, with 2005’s Human After All hitting store shelves well before the Kanye West Grammy appearance and the blogosphere’s more or less unanimous acceptance of Daft Punk as the electronic overlords. Not only that, the record is packed with collaborations, some relatively predictable like house producer Todd Edwards, and some way out of left field like Animal Collective’s Panda Bear.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Korn at the Fillmore Silver Spring, 5/21

From nu metal to dubstep, there’s really only one act that comes to mind when you say the band whose name is a misspelled fruit*: Korn.

The rockers who helped define pre-millennial guitar music are coming to The Fillmore Silver Spring on May 21, and we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away. How can you get your hands on ’em? It’s as easy as saying “I totally had the Follow The Leader CD in my Discman in 1999.”

Other than being regulars on the Carson Daly-era of TRL and having their singer produce the Chris Angel Theme song, Korn is credited with 10 albums that have sold millions of copies across the globe. The quintet is known for their heavy, overdriven guitar and Jonathan Davis’ unique vocal flairs.

Bibio’s Silver Wilkinson out today on vinyl via Warp Records

Enjoy earthy tones and warm sounds? Warp Records staple Bibio has probably made your day before and is sure to do so again with today’s release of his seventh album Silver Wilkinson.

Bibio’s effortless ability to combine analog warmth with modern-day beats creates an intriguing sound, juxtaposing crunk with melancholy. The result is a brain-feeding experience heavy on nostalgia but still full of head-nodding and the desire to flail limbs in some sort of rhythmic manner, which is what my friends accuse me of doing instead of “dancing.” Emotive and rhythmic? Yes, I’ll bite.

To promote Silver Wilkinson, Bibio released “You,” which harkens back to the warm vocal cuts on older tracks like “Fire Ant” and “À tout à l’heure,” a sparkly tape-warped pop tune bubbling with optimism. Both emphasize Bibio’s lean on nostalgic melancholy and aural texture. On April 16, Warp released a 7″ of the latter with some uber-delicious art available through Bleep.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: The Hush Sound and Hockey at U St. Music Hall, 5/17

Though it was commonplace to hear it around my house whenever I was a child and ranted too much about Pokemon, nowadays “hush” is a word with some squeaky clean pop associations.

You can get a full serving of what I’m talking about when The Hush Sound come to U Street Music Hall, presented by the 9:30 Club, with Hockey on Friday, May 17. We’ve got tickets to give away, and getting a hold of them is way easier than you think.

Indie darlings The Hush Sound are known for their natural pop talents. The group’s instincts lay somewhere between Vanessa Carlton and a low-key Minus The Bear. Over the years, they’ve amassed a following with their skilled songcraft, full of melodic fish-hooks baited with relatable lyricism.

Though they went through a hiatus from 2009 to 2013, the band is now back and in full motion. They’ve already pumped out the two-track single “Forty Five,” full of fresh compositions, with a full-length effort on the way—possibly a 2013 release.

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Robyn Hitchcock and The Venus 3 at the 9:30 Club, 4/27

Robyn Hitchcock has been composing alt-pop for decades, traversing soundscapes of sublime and accessible compositions with enlightened lyricism among several different musical ventures.

After initial critical acclaim with The Soft Boys, then later with his solo material and group success with The Egyptians, Robyn Hitchcock most recently has been working with longtime friends Peter Buck of R.E.M, Scott McCaughey of Young Fresh Fellows, and Bill Rieflin of Ministry and R.E.M. Collectively known as Robyn Hitchcock and The Venus 3, the quartet have released three full-length albums of hook-heavy indie pop in the past 7 years.

We’ve got tickets to give away to see the cult pop icon with his talent-laden trio, The Venus 3, at the 9:30 Club. Getting ahold of them is WAY easier than writing a brilliant song.
