Wildboys Residency @ Detroit Bar: Night #1

TONIGHT is the kick-off of hip-hop/electro group Wildboys‘ residency at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Accompanying the band is Maxx Femm, Kiven, and DJ Beefam. Wildboys were up for Best Hip Hop at the OC Music Awards this past Saturday AND if you didn’t hear already, it is true they pulled a Kanye West on stage when Avenged Sevenfold won for Best Album…hey, they had to show their love for indie pop group The New Limb.

As for tonight’s show, the first 50 people through the door get a free compilation of the artists performing that night. Also, every Monday (except the 14th) you can see Wildboys perform and they will be doing some fun giveaways…yes, koozies may be involved. Expect some new mashups by Wildboys as well. Why not start the week off with a dance party? Heck yes!

The shows are free, 21+ and start at 9 p.m. As Wildboys would say, BSNP (translated as Bullshit ‘N Party).

Happy Friday!

Hello The Vinyl District Los Angeles readers!!

It’s Friday and time for some weekend fun. While you’re a little over half-way done for the day, I’m sure you need a pick-me-up to blast you through the next few hours. These two things got me a little too excited so I thought I would share the feeling with you all.

1) DOWNLOAD an MNDR remix of Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” at rcrdlbl.com right now.

2) STREAM Voxhaul Broadcast’s new album Timing Is Everything on bandcamp.com. Definitely listen to “Leaving On The 5th,” “Blackout,” “Loose Chains” and “Drysand” but the whole album is what I had anticipated…most likely the best local record to come out this year.

TONIGHT: Vintage Wednesdays Launch Party

Head over to The District Lounge in Orange for Vintage Wednesdays!!! Featuring art, DJs, music, charitable groups like 31 Bits and Chains For Chains, Vintage Wednesdays is changing things up at The District Lounge. No cover and 21+

A lot of words come to mind when you think of “vintage.” It could be “old,” “classic” or even “dirty” but we would say the best word is “preservation.” And preserving art, music and fashion is exactly what we’re thinking for the new weekly event VINTAGE WEDNESDAYS at The District Lounge of Old Towne Orange. Showcasing local artists, DJs, musicians and designers while offering a creative place for socializing and schmoozing (afte…r a couple drinks we all will be) is what we’re up to every week, starting March 2.

To kick it off right, the Vintage Wednesdays launch party includes music by Beefam, CQ and DJ Davy (of We Are The Pilots), artwork supplied by FIND Art Magazine and an eclectic mix of fashion pieces by activist groups 31 Bits and Chains For Chains. Photographer Josh Beck will be on site taking snapshots of the event as well.

Music Monday: The Outdoors

This past weekend, a particular Echo Park indie rock four-piece caught my attention. The Outdoors, forming this past summer, recorded their debut EP over a period of two weeks in an Arizona condo.

Sweating in the desert air, the result was a standout record of distant guitars and elevating vocals, reflecting a Radiohead-esque feel like in “I’m Just Drifting” and “The Listener.” But the song that has been stuck on my mind these last few days is “Seven Six Zero,” which you can hear in this fun video of the guys just being themselves…sunbathing on a moving RV named “The Rogue” and so on.

Download The Outdoors’ self-titled EP for free HERE and if you donate a couple bucks to their Kickstarter campaign then that would make for one heck of a good deed this week.

Check out the guys performing March 9 at the Bootleg Theater with Kiev and more artists for a benefit show supporting the Los Angeles Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. More information and tickets can be found here.

Video: Wait. Think. Fast., ‘Hidden’

LA’s rock/Latin pop band Wait. Think. Fast. go back and forth from singing in Spanish to English while meshing guitars, synthesizers and piano. What’s great about the group is that they can take on a variety of sounds from the rock-driven “Covina Park” to the pop-fused “Si Es por Amor” to the misty intrigue of “Hidden.”

Filmed right outside the steps of their Echo Park home, here is their music video for “Hidden,” featuring the song’s lyrics. Purchase the album Lucas del Sur on iTunes.

Jeremy Sole, Curator of Third World Funk

By Dulani Wallace

I once met Jeremy Sole a few months after I moved to Los Angeles in an old converted theater turned community center. It was 2004 and I was staking out a little neighborhood called Leimert Park—an Emerald City of sorts plotted along Crenshaw Boulevard. Sole, who was emceeing a show inside turned the old playhouse into a percussive, ass-shaking revue that was an outright nod to the Nigerian legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Sole is a white guy from Chicago who has prodigious knowledge of black music. I know this because his musical vocabulary is robust with beats derived from the likes of Cymande, Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye, to name a few. He’s a resident DJ at Zanzibar in Santa Monica where he heats up the floor Thursday nights with funk influences from around the world.

Afrofunké, Sole’s Thursday show, is an incantation of Third world rhythms. Fela, one of DJ’s influences, didn’t just make music for self-satisfaction, royalties or other reasons musicians make music. His music asserted an inherent problem that plagued his people and his nation—the lack of democracy. Fela’s long gone but Sole is ushering the beats continuously on the dance floor and on the airwaves.

Los Angeles is a lucky town to have Afrobeat—the formal name of Fela’s music—as a subculture. Afrobeat transcends any specific race or creed. And DJ Jeremy Sole Thursdays night shows have sealed rifts between black, white, yellow and brown. Imagine a time in the not-too-distant future where “black music” artists will be categorized with Def Leppard and Of Montreal. It’s not far-fetched. Jeremy gets it.

Video: LA Font, ‘Fine Lines’

If I had to describe LA Font with only one word, I would have to say “sexy.” Between lead singer and guitarist Danny Bobbe’s infectiously brooding vocals and the lustful angst that transpires from every song, LA Font encourages any uptight individual to let go and be a little mysterious. And luckily, you’ll understand what I mean after you watch the video of the guys doing a live session of their song “Fine Lines” ….plus you get up close with Bobbe….sweat and all.

Get LA Font’s album The American Leagues for free at http://lafont.bandcamp.com
