All jokes aside, New Jersey is a pretty great place. While it has a lot to offer as a state, it also has a rich musical history of which many people remain unaware. Everyone knows Sinatra and The Boss, but there’s much more.
Tune in to Garden State Sound with Evan Toth to explore the diverse music with connections to New Jersey. You’ll hear in-depth interviews with some of Jersey’s best music makers and have the opportunity win tickets to some of the best concerts in the state.
“People just aren’t brave enough to share their own opinions anymore, very few folks really let the truth fly. New Jerseyans, however, are a little different. Senior contributing editor at Stereophile magazine, world-renowned hi-fi, music, and vinyl expert Michael Fremer isn’t worried about offending you. He’s going to talk to you about good sound, good music, and why vinyl is the best medium to listen to. He’s not going to say it sounds “warmer” or share any vague, hazy recollections about his pappy spinning discs. No. He’s going to talk some physics, and science and get in your face a little bit, maybe more than a little.
But, at the end of the day, it’s not about meaninglessly chastising the 16-bit Linear PCM sampled at 44,100 Hz! It’s about the music and making it sound as good as it can, and hearing it as close as possible to the way the guys who recorded it wanted you to hear it. It’s about letting your ears lead the way.
He’s a nice and open guy, too. Sure, he may be an icon in the upperest-crust of elite hi-fi and audiophile circles, but he champions good sound for anyone who is interested in chasing that dragon. In fact, during our pre-interview, Mr. Fremer received a package from a delivery service. “What are these boxes?” the mystified deliveryman asked. Fremer replied, “Preamps!”
Before long, the deliveryman was sitting in Mr. Fremer’s personal listening space—in his personal listening chair—hearing Sinatra’s Swingin’ Session! on one of the best turntables available on Planet Earth. Our deliveryman was happy, and so was Mr. Fremer: he is always game to share good sound—and good music—with those who, deep down inside, know that it transcends what their cell phone provides.
So, this week on Garden State Sound, jump on board for a frenetic hour of audio-talk, Jersey music, and truth from Mr. Michael Fremer.” —EZT
