On Sunday, Brent Jackson, the 39-year-old owner of Old Gold Vintage Vinyl, an eclectic, pop-up record shop that recently landed a permanent address in Osborne Village, will be one of 90 vendors taking part in Rockin’ Richard’s Record and CD Sale. This will be Jackson’s 20th appearance at the twice-a-year sale in Winnipeg, the second largest of its kind in the country. And while the hip-hop, funk and soul DJ again devoted a chunk of time in the days leading up to the event debating which albums to bring along and which to leave behind, he admits he could have simplified things somewhat, by heading there with boxes and boxes filled with the exact same album. “Seriously, if I went there with nothing but Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, I’d probably be just as far ahead at the end of the day,” he says with a chuckle…
Taipei, TW | Man gifts 10,000 albums to Tainan music library: Yeh Sze-ya (葉思雅), an academic in obstetrics and gynecology living in Arcadia, California, has donated his collection of more than 10,000 classical music records and CDs to the Hsu-shih Music Library in Tainan. Yeh and his wife, Grace Chang (張信惠), resolved to give away 4,350 vinyl records and 6,350 CDs, which became a huge three-month project, as they had to spend eight hours each day organizing and packing the items into more than 100 boxes so that the shipments would comply with customs regulations and international copyright rules. “I knew it was a huge job, but doable,” the 82-year-old retired doctor said. “If we can help younger people, then it is like extending our lives. The Western Paradise in Buddhism or Heaven in Christianity do not necessarily have to exist, as long as these experiences that once touched us can be passed down to the next generation,” he said.

This follows 15 years of upward trend – today, while remaining a niche product, the vinyl record may well eventually survive to be the only analogue medium for music, as the sales of CD continue their downward spiral. Researchers in sociology and consumer culture have shown how this trend goes well beyond nostalgia – buyers of vinyl are attracted by its status as an object, its physical presence. This attraction matters even more today, as most of the time listening to a song does not involve buying a physical support anymore.
Ocean Vinyl: the first playable record made from recycled ocean plastic: Sharp’s Brewery is working with Nick Mulvey to make music that will protect British coastlines from plastic pollution and help reduce single plastic usage. The Cornish Brewery and Mercury Music Prize nominee have today released the first track pressed onto a record made from recycled plastic, which has been washed up on Cornish beaches. Sharp’s Brewery and Nick Mulvey announced the first of its kind collaboration with the launch of the track, titled ‘In the Anthropocene’. Proceeds from the track, including from sales of the limited-edition record pressed onto recycled plastic and digital streams*, will go to Surfers Against Sewage to help protect British coastlines from pollution, including plastic waste.

Who can forget the classic hits Humpty Dumpty or Edelweiss twanging away on your own private record player. Parents also loved the record players as they didn’t require batteries, just the old fashioned wind up key. There was hardly a home without the iconic little red box. Collectors have been snapping up the vintage much loved toy, paying big bucks for both the player and the plastic records to play on the music box. The standard selling price for the record player is upwards of $100, the better the condition the higher the worth. Premium condition record players with the box with no records missing have been selling for over $300. There is also a market for the records themselves, just one record can fetch upwards of $25, other sellers have been grouping them together and selling as collections.
Fleetwood Mac colored vinyl box set available in November: Fleetwood Mac released five back-to-back multi-platinum albums between 1975 and 1987, an astonishing feat that drove them to become one of the best-selling bands in the world. On November 29, these classic albums will be reissued on colored vinyl as a limited edition, individually numbered boxed set of 2,000 copies, available exclusively at the Rhino.com store for $119.98. A new incarnation of Fleetwood Mac debuted in the summer of 1975 that included Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie, along with new members Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The group’s first album together, Fleetwood Mac (sometimes called “The White Album”), topped the Billboard album chart, spent more than a year in the Top 40 and sold more than five million copies in the U.S. thanks to songs like “Landslide,” “Say You Love Me,” and “Rhiannon.”
Capitol Record celebrates Bob Seger’s ‘Against the Wind’ 40th anniversary with vinyl reissue: Capitol Records/UMe are pleased to mark the 40th anniversary of Bob Seger’s 5X platinum, chart-topping album Against The Wind with a first ever remastered vinyl reissue to be released Friday, November 22nd. Against The Wind will be offered in standard black vinyl (150 gram) with fully restored original artwork. Additionally, a limited edition color version in translucent blue vinyl (150 gram) will be released that will include a bonus commemorative 7” black vinyl single of two of Seger’s early recordings “Lookin’ Back” b/w “Lucifer.” The rare studio version of “Lookin’ Back,” reissued for the first time since it was originally released in 1971, was released as a 7” single only and “Lucifer” was the first and only single released from Seger’s 1970 album, Mongrel. The single will be in a classic 7” Capitol Records sleeve inside of the album jacket.
Get Rodriguez’s ’70s Rock Albums Remastered on Vinyl or CD: A relatively unknown musician from the early-’70s that’s gained popularity stateside over the last ten years just got the remastered treatment with two new reissues available on CD and 180-gram vinyl. And they’re available right now. When I mention Sixto Rodriguez to anyone I know, I get blank stares. I’ve even talked with a few record store owners about the musician, and they’ve never heard of him either. If Rodriguez put out just one album, I could believe it, but he released two rock albums in the US filled with psychedelic folk and pop that made a perfect winning combination back then. While he was an obscure artist — and still is to some — his albums are must-haves for anyone who considers themselves a musicophile, melomaniac, or discophile. His music is melodically simple but full of socially conscious anthems about poverty, love, rebellion, and the streets of Detroit, Michigan, where he was born and raised. If you like Donovan, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, and other music from the late-’60s and early-’70s, you’re probably going to like Rodriguez.
