Twitter, of course, had plenty of answers. But mostly one: Wicker Park’s Reckless Records, 1379 N. Milwaukee Ave. Turns out, they already knew about Reckless. Geneva’s iconic Area Records closing after 40 years: Musician Larry Williams once said that rock ‘n’ roll has no beginning and no end, for it is the very pulse of life itself. So as one of the Finger Lakes region’s longest-serving independent music stores closes, Area Records & Music owner Mikel George views it not as an end but rather the beginning of a new chapter four decades in the making. “It has certainly been a good time, and our customers have always been incredible,” George said recently, as the store prepares for its liquidation sale beginning Friday. “I never felt as if I was going to work every day. The social atmosphere and business routine mixed together really well.”

This once-pronounced dead media has risen from the ashes to serve far more than a niche audience. According to Billboard, vinyl sales have increased more than 250 percent in the last eight years. Capitalizing on that rising tide is Dayton’s relatively new record fair, happening Saturday, Sept. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Yellow Cab Building. The first event, held in February, was patterned after Cincinnati’s Northside Record Fair.

On the more conventional side, the record player has direct drive and automatic tonearm lift. But it also comes with a remote control as well as Bluetooth to transmit music wirelessly. And the protective cover can be removed automatically. The device will be available from January 2018, according to the manufacturer, with the price yet to be announced.

Available exclusively at BroadwayRecords.com, the deluxe, limited edition, double record set printed on colored vinyl will be limited to a pressing of 1,000. Each record will be hand-numbered. This item will not be available in stores and is now available for pre-order. “We have been looking for the right cast album to debut on vinyl, and after one listen to The Lightning Thief, I knew that was the one. We think we have created something really special for the Percy Jackson and cast album collectors. We are so excited that our first foray into vinyl is with this dynamic album,” said Van Dean, President of Broadway Records.

It’s “Spin,” now on display. “These are some of the biggest visual display retail windows in the country,” says freelance visual artist Ben Lewis says. He’s standing in one of the two enormous, 90-foot Korshak window display rooms at the Crescent. But it isn’t just the air-conditioning that makes this workspace interesting.
