New record store chain coming to St. John’s, Canadian-owned Sunrise Records setting up shop in Avalon Mall: The Canadian chain, which bills itself as independently operated, released an image through its Twitter and Facebook account announcing that it would soon establish a location at the Avalon Mall…A major component of Sunrise’s expansion focuses on the growing popularity of vinyl records, with plans to stock over 2,000 titles at each location. They’re also committed to supporting more local artists. “Sunrise will work to broaden the assortment of music that HMV carried, with a planned 50% increase of CDs, and a massively expanded apparel section including the hottest music and entertainment related merchandise,” the company wrote in a statement announcing its expansion.
Discogs is clamping down on the sale of bootlegs: Online vinyl marketplace Discogs is cracking down on the sales of unofficial records, reports Resident Advisor. Though the seller’s policy has always included terms which prohibit the sale of “unauthorized reproductions of items, such as bootlegs, counterfeit, pirate copies, etc” the site is “adding resources” to enforce its long-standing seller’s agreement. “The back catalogues of labels who press unofficial records remain listed on the site, (but) they are no longer available to buy or sell on the Discogs’ marketplace,” said a representative of Discogs speaking to RA.
Rise in sales point to a comeback for the humble cassette: ‘These are people who are music freaks and don’t want anything to do with mp3s and the rest of the digital industry. They were the ones who welcomed the comeback of vinyl and now they are embracing the cassette tape. People tell me: I want to be in on this too,’ Baur told NOS economics correspondent Jeroen Schutijser. The cassette tape is taking on cult status, Schutijser writes. Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Jett Rebel have all released albums on tape in the Netherlands. Baur hopes to introduce new and better quality tapes in the near future which, he says, calls for new cassette players too.
