Orlando, FL | Best place to visit after watching Empire Records: Park Ave CDS. First, a confession: Unlike the editors (and probably many readers) of Orlando Weekly, I’m a proud member of Gen Z, so I didn’t grow up with vinyl. I fell in love with record stores after watching Empire Records for the first time, and Park Ave is the closest thing I can compare to that magical on-screen location. Not only do they have a vast collection of vinyl, CDs, books, games and other novelty items that will guarantee you find something unique upon every visit, they also host festive fan events, listening parties and Record Store Day celebrations each year (complete with awesome vendors and giveaways!). The staff is the coolest you’ll ever meet and always has the best taste when choosing which albums to play as you browse through their extensive collection.

Glasgow, UK | In Pictures: Remembering Glasgow’s lost record stores including Tower Records, Listen and Lost Chord: Glasgow has always had a strong connection to music, with the city having once had the finest collection of record shops outside London in the UK. Glasgow was recognised as the first UNESCO City of Music in 2008, with it having a vibrant music scene spread across the city which caters for anyone. A number of huge acts have been born in Glasgow with it being very little surprise that the city had some of the finest record shops going, throughout the decades. Bands such as Simple Minds, Primal Scream, Franz Ferdinand have all emerged from the Glasgow music scene with labels such as Alan Horne’s Postcard Records and Creation becoming legendary and writing their place in history. There has always been a desire in Glasgow for ‘new’ music as we continually search for tunes and artists that we are yet to fall in love with with some acts even giving performances at some of these locations or heading in for a browse themselves.

Norwich, UK | Mama Oh No to perform in Chantry Place HMV store in Norwich: A Norwich band will tune up for the release of its first album since being signed to a record label with a performance in the city centre this weekend. Mama Oh No caught HMV’s attention after performing at its Chantry Place shop last year as part of the retailer’s HMV On Wax programme. That led to them being selected from over 70 acts that were nominated and this week the band were announced as the second signing to HMV’s 1921 Records. Inspired by bands such as The Black Keys and Khruangbin, Mama Oh No’s music has been described as “dark, haunting and cinematic sounds filled with raw emotive bluesy vocals” by Kitty Perrin of BBC Introducing. Their debut vinyl album, Mamasaurus, will be released on October 27 and ahead of that they will be performing at HMV in Chantry Place again on Saturday (August 26), from 3pm.

Muscatine, IA | Muscatine library makes its vinyl offer: The Musser Public Library in Muscatine is among the first U.S. libraries to venture into offering the old-but-new-again technology of long-playing record albums, also known as LPs or vinyl, as part of its collections. The library’s eclectic assortment of about 100 albums by artists ranging from George Strait to Judas Priest to Beyonce, to be introduced in September, will be housed near the first-floor service desk, according to a Wednesday library release. The music falls into three basic categories: Jazz/Blues, Country/Folk and Rock/Pop. Patrons need not worry if they don’t have a record player; MPL will also offer two portable record players for checkout. The devices will be kept at the service desk. Reference Librarian Emma Stoffer is cataloging the records as they arrive. She said the library will grow the collection as needed. Patrons are welcome to suggest new titles for the library to obtain, but newer releases are more likely to be available, Library Director Bobby Fiedler said.
