New record store, The Mixtape Shop, opens in Brooklyn: The Mixtape Shop will have its grand opening this Saturday, July 15th, at 1129 Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. It first launched as an online record store last year, with a broad inventory that spans from jazz, funk and soul to house, techno and regional styles from around the world. This weekend they’ll unveil their physical storefront on the main strip in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, offering new and used vinyl as well as “listening stations, Klipshcorns and plenty of seating.” The shop will start serving coffee and food in the coming weeks as well. Their grand opening this Saturday will run from noon to 8 PM.
Hitchin World Food and Music Day at Gatefold Records is huge hit: The popular record store played host to the event that featured DJs playing music from around the world on Saturday. Cult Hitchin style-icon and hairdresser Felix Camfield-Walker, owner of Farley’s Hair Emporium a few doors down, was on the decks spinning ska tunes, afrobeat, old-skool hip hop and Nigerian disco. The afternoon also featured the mouth-watering falafel dishes of Hitchin chef Martin Burke as part of his pop-up middle eastern street food kitchen, as well as summer punch and craft beers. Jak Uttley, joint owner of Gatefold with his partner Nicola Uttley, said afterwards: “Thank you to everyone who made our World Food and Music Day a huge success and awesome fun.”

Waxwork Records Releases First Issue of Waxwork Comics: Horror record label Waxwork Records is expanding their operations with Waxwork Comics, a new venture that will release 32-page anthology horror comics in the style of EC Comics. Also, each issue comes with a 7″ companion vinyl that acts as a soundtrack to the comics. For their first issue, readers will meet original and inventive characters such as The Die-Rector and The De-Composer. There will be two stories, the first of which is “Slumber Party”, which was written by Gabe Soria (“Batman ’66”) and features music from Douglas Pipes (Krampus, Trick ‘r Treat). In that story, readers will, “…discover what happens to an unsuspecting vacationing family when a cursed board game thrusts them into an actual fight for survival.”

Expanded version of Linda Ronstadt’s 1977 #1 album “Simple Dreams” due in September: This September marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Simple Dreams, one of Linda Ronstadt’s most successful studio albums, and in honor of the milestone, an expanded and remastered edition of the chart-topping record will hit stores on September 15. The reissue will be available on CD and vinyl LP, as a digital download and via streaming services. Simple Dreams spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 at the end of 1977, and went on to sell more than three million copies in the U.S. It features four top 40 hits, all of which were covers: Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou,” Buddy Holly’s “It’s So Easy,” Warren Zevon’s “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and The Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice.”
