Miami, FL | Terrestrial Funk Is Opening a Miami Record Store: Terrestrial Funk’s brick-and-mortar record store opens in Miami’s Design District on Saturday. Miami has a brand-new record store. Terrestrial Funk, the longtime Miami-based record label, is opening a brick-and-mortar pop-up shop in the Design District. Brother Dan, the label’s owner and DJ at clubs and venues around town, announced the shop’s opening on Instagram. The storefront will be at 35 NE 40th St., just across from other locally owned retailers, Dále Zine and Andrew, in a section of the luxury shopping district that’s quickly becoming a haven for Miami natives. “Terrestrial Funk started seven years ago as a label and online record store,” Dan wrote on Instagram. “We started the Miami Record Fair and later ran a mobile record shop out of a 1977 Toyota Chinook. Tomorrow, we open our first brick and mortar at the old Piccadilly building off 40th St. and North Miami Ave. It’s a sight to behold.” Brother Dan has been teasing the shop since at least 2022. It will stock thousands of records from around the globe, including “unfiltered” dollar bins.

Hexagon Records opens in downtown Petoskey: While music fans everywhere have been revisiting their love of vinyl records, Petoskey didn’t have many spots for hardcore collectors. Now, Hexagon Records in downtown Petoskey is helping provide a variety of new and used records. Michael Grigg, owner of Hexagon Records, has always loved music. He even planned to open a record store in a few years after retiring. But when he was laid off from his corporate job in March, he decided to push the opening date sooner. …Grigg has been collecting records since he was young, he said, and while he’s not necessarily a natural-born collector, he’s been finding fulfillment in finding, cataloging and pricing records. Grigg said figuring out the musical interests of the community can be difficult, but talking to customers helps him decide what he’d like to have stocked.

Minneapolis, MN | Extreme Noise Records at 30: ‘Bringing Different Generations of the Punk Scene Together.’ Still booming after three decades, the DIY Minneapolis record shop has organized a months-long series of anniversary concerts. Around 1997, when Phil Schwarz first stepped into Extreme Noise Records, the punk-rock teenager from the northern Twin Cities suburbs knew he’d arrived. When he finally found the correct location, that is. “I had looked it up in the phone book, because I had heard about Extreme Noise from some people at school—but there was no record store there!” he remembers with a chuckle. “They had just moved up the street to Nicollet.” It became immediately clear to Schwarz, who grew up reading Thrasher Magazine and listening to hardcore, that Extreme Noise was a special place. “It was kind of my utopia, I guess. It was exactly what I was looking for,” he says. He “vividly” remembers his first purchase: Four Old Seven Inches, the 1984 Discord Records comp featuring the Teen Idles, State of Alert, Government Issue, and Minor Threat.
UK | HMV boss says more people buying DVDs and Blu-ray: More shoppers are buying Blu-Ray and DVDs of movies and TV shows despite the rise in streaming platforms, the boss of HMV has claimed. Phil Halliday, managing director of HMV, said the retailer was in “good health” with all of its main product areas back in growth. His comments come after the revival of the High Street stalwart, which was saved from administration in 2019. Mr Halliday said that “physical visual” sales had increased, adding that “4K and Blu-Ray have been doing particularly well”, but figures suggest sales across the industry are still declining. “When streaming first came out I think a lot of people saw it as cheap and with huge breadth of choice, but I’m not sure people see it like that now,” he said. “People are willing to pay for a physical copy of shows or films they know they will rewatch.”

Bon Jovi releasing ‘Greatest Hits’ album on vinyl for the first time: Bon Jovi‘s 40th anniversary celebration continues with the first-ever vinyl release of their Greatest Hits album. The New Jersey rockers, who released their new album, Forever, in June, just announced that their compilation Bon Jovi: Greatest Hits will be released on two-LP black vinyl on Sept. 13. There will also be a limited-edition “smoke”-colored vinyl that comes with one of three unique lithographs. Originally released in 2010, Bon Jovi: Greatest Hits features the band’s biggest hits, including “Runaway,” “Living On A Player,” “You Give Love A Bad Name,” “Bad Medicine” and “It’s My Life.” It also features what at the time were two new songs, “What Do You Got?” and “No Apologies.”
