Glide had the pleasure of speaking with Mark Goodwin, a manager at Young Ones Records. We discussed the history of the shop, its massive catalog, and much more.
Columbus, GA | Columbus man to open only record shop in the city so people can ‘experience’ music: One day in Spring of 2021, Brian Cook was driving home with an obscene amount of vinyl records from an Opelika record shop. A man in his 40’s, Cook has lived through the progression of being able to listen to music from records and cassette tapes to CDs and then digital music. He’s bought the same albums multiple times in different media as technology changed over the years. The reason it’s important to listen to and appreciate records for what they are, Cook said, is because they aren’t just a way to listen to music. And I think a lot of young people these days, and people my age, appreciate that experience.”
Taylor Swift becomes the female artist with the most No.1 albums in history: Swift is also the first living artist since 1966 to have four albums in the top 10 at the same time. Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) has broken multiple records, and now we don’t mean corrupted vinyl playing ’90s British club tracks. The re-recorded version of Swift’s 2010 album arrived earlier this month and has debuted at No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. As Billboard reports, this achievement now makes Swift the first female artist in history to earn 12 chart-topping albums. She previously tied with former record-holder Barbra Streisand on 11 following the release of Midnights last year. In addition to that impressive record, Swift has also become the first living artist to have four albums in the top 10 at the same time since 1966. On this week’s Billboard 200 chart Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is joined by Folklore, Lover, Midnights. The last living musician to have four albums in the top 10 at the same time was trumpet player Herb Alpert.
Washington, DC | Vinyl fever in US shows no signs of abating: …One of Stein’s favorite places for vinyl browsing is Som Records, a small music store hidden away on 14th Street amid restaurants and nightspots in downtown Washington DC. Its owner, Neal Becton, who had worked for a decade as a reporter for the Washington Post, founded that shop 15 years ago. Becton told Efe he saw a boost in customers shortly before the onset of the pandemic in the US and that the boom has not stopped since. According to the Luminate study, only around half of vinyl consumers have a record player at home, and in fact many of the buyers of these products are collectors. Becton, however, says he has seen his customer base expand. “When I first opened, it was mainly DJs and collectors (that) were my main two customers, pretty much. I didn’t get many young people unless they were in the club music (scene) or something. Now I get high-school children, 18-year-olds, families shopping together,” he said.
Vinyl Sales Are Up And Disc Makers Cut The Cost To Manufacture By 35%: FACT #1: Revenues from US vinyl records grew 17% to $1.2 billion last year and accounted for 71% of physical format revenues. FACT #2: Physical music sales at the merch table remain a top source of revenue source for many musicians. So it was particularly exciting when I saw that Disc Makers cut the cost to manufacture 100 vinyl LPs by 35% from $1999 to an all-time low of $1,299 for a standard black vinyl pressing, full-color or black & white LP labels, a full-color Jacket w/spine, and shrinkwrapping. It’s billed as a limited-time offer. I did a quick search and could not find a better price for all of this, and no, Disc Makers did NOT pay for this post. Denton, TX | KUZU releases schedule, lineup for Denton’s debut record convention: Local radio station KUZU-FM (92.9) will celebrate its sixth anniversary with a record convention and concert this weekend. In collaboration with Recycled Books, Records & CDs, the nonprofit radio station will launch the “Revolution 6” benefit concert and Revolution Record Convention on Saturday, July 22. Here’s what attendees can expect: The Revolution Record Convention will be held at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400 E. Hickory St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 22. The convention will feature a full day of local, regional, and national vendors of collectible vinyl records, posters, memorabilia and other forms of music media. It will also feature live panels and entertainment. General admission will be free starting at 11 a.m., but attendees can pay $10 online to get in one hour early at 10 a.m.
Philadelphia, PA | Don Giovanni Records celebrates 20 years, announces 20th Anniversary expo in Philly: The event will feature a record/book/art fair and concerts from Tenement, Hunchback, Sammus, Shellshag, and more. Don Giovanni Records marks two decades as an independent label with the Don Giovanni Records 20th Anniversary Expo, scheduled for October 6th and 7th at First Unitarian Church. Spread throughout both days are a range of live performances from Tenement (playing their first show since 2017), Hunchback, Laura Stevenson, Sammus, Mikey Erg, Roadside Graves, Mechanical Canine, Weakened Friends, Paisley Fields, Chris Gethard, Shellshag, and Rodeo Boys in addition to a mystery headliner that has yet to be announced . Expo goers can also explore the fair in between sets, digging through record crates, looking at art, and paging through books. Label owner Joe Steinhardt excitedly writes, “I can’t believe we made it 20 years, and thinking about how the label started I’m still not completely sure how we did.”
Alligator Records to Unveil Reissue of Delbert McClinton’s Live From Austin: On Friday, July 21, 2023, Alligator Records, is set to release a reissue of Delbert McClinton’s “Live From Austin.” This album, which has undergone meticulous remastering overseen by the original producer, Bruce Iglauer, the founder and president of Alligator Records, will be reintroduced to the public after a hiatus of three decades, making its first appearance on LP in a resplendent 140g black vinyl format. Originally unveiled in 1989, “Live From Austin” marked a significant milestone as the inaugural live recording from Delbert McClinton, a venerable figure in the realm of Texas roadhouse singing. Delbert’s musical creations defy easy categorization, artfully fusing his Texan heritage with elements of rock emanating from raucous roadhouses, the evocative strains of juke-joint blues, the soulful essence of Memphis, and the authenticity of country.
Beastie Boys to Reissue Hello Nasty Vinyl Box Set: The 4xLP set has been out of print for years. July 14th, marks the 25th anniversary of Beastie Boys’ fifth album, Hello Nasty. To mark the occasion, UME is reissuing the long out-of-print deluxe vinyl version of the album that was originally released in 2009. The 4xLP set boasts 21 bonus tracks including rarities, remixes, and B-sides, as well as a hardcover coffee table book. It’s set for release on September 8th.
