Net proceeds will now go to support the work of The BRIT Trust – the music industry charity that supports causes that promote education and wellbeing through the power of music and the creative arts, such as The BRIT School and Nordoff Robbins music therapy among many others. It means that the White Label Auction hosted by the music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions has now raised a total approaching £100,000 for The BRIT Trust over its three editions to date. Each of the 175 lots of ‘white label’ LP test pressings, some of them signed or personalised by the artists, sold, with many typically going for hundreds of pounds and eight lots commanding four-figure sums.

Record shop owner Andrew Schaer said it wasn’t a tough sell getting people to sign them. Even though the commission in February temporarily backed off its paid program that turned two-hour free spots into paid ones, the city is still considering the proposal. Officials believe that too much of the street-side parking is unavailable because free spaces are less likely to turn over. …Schaer said people simply don’t want to have to pay to park when making a quick stop. “I already know how it’s going to affect the business,” Schaer said. “They did a trial run for about three and a half weeks months back, and it just cut my revenue in half…” He added that people just weren’t paying for the parking because they “thought it was a money grab.”

Lou Reed Album With Early Demos of Velvet Underground Classics, Unreleased Songs Coming in August: As part of the celebration around the late Lou Reed’s 80 th birthday, an album of his earliest demos — comprising a number of Velvet Underground classics recorded in 1965, along with several songs dating back to his college and teen years — will be released August 26 on Light in the Attic Records in partnership with Reed’s longtime partner Laurie Anderson. The album, titled “Words & Music, May 1965,” is the inaugural release from the Lou Reed Archive Series, and dovetails with the opening Thursday of an extensive Reed exhibit at the New York Public Library, titled “Lou Reed: Caught Between the Twisted Stars.” The album includes the earliest known recordings of such classics as “Heroin,” “Pale Blue Eyes,” “Iʼm Waiting for the Man” and several unreleased tracks. The bulk of the album is comprised of the 1965 tracks, which were recorded with the assistance of Reed’s future bandmate John Cale. Reed mailed the tape to himself as a “poor manʼs copyright,” and remained sealed in its original envelope and unopened for nearly 50 years.
