A new record store and gallery, called Spot Lite, has opened in Detroit’s Islandview neighbourhood. Spot Lite’s curated record selection will focus primarily on house, jazz, r’n’b, and soul. Alongside the store, the space also includes a 400-person capacity performance space, a bar and café, and a gallery space. Spot Lite is an extension of art print shop and gallery 1xRun, located in Eastern Market.
Odessa, TX | Local record store has been in the Basin for 45 years: For 45 years, a record store has stood the test of time right here in the Basin. Meet the owner who’s following in his father’s footsteps. Sam Logan’s father opened the record store back in July of 1975. “It just felt natural to continue my dad’s legacy,” said Logan. “We’ve had a lot of long-time customers who have been coming in here since the day we opened and now, they’re bringing their kids and their grandkids in,” said Logan. “Now, we have a new generation of kids that have fallen back in love with vinyl.” “They just don’t make music like they used too,” said Gonzalez. The sound of it is just very different. It’s a very nostalgic feeling, it makes me feel really like magical.” That magical feeling is the same for 17-year-old Deacon Perez. “It’s just so nice to look at and it’s so nice to put on a record player and listen, even the audio sounds different on the records, it’s amazing,” said Perez.

Record Store Day 2021, which brings together over 250 independent record shops across the UK, is gearing up for two big drops on Saturday 12th June and Saturday 17th July. And for the first time, Meantime Brewing Company is proud to become the ‘Official Beer Partner’ for the auspicious musical occasion. In celebration of the unique event that was founded 14 years ago, the Greenwich-based brewery is launching an exclusive Meantime 33:45 beer. Proceeds from the special batch will be donated to War Child, the specialist charity for children affected by conflict – and the official charity partner of Record Store Day. The table beer (3.5% ABV) has been brewed especially for RSD and is apparently inspired by the American west coast to offer “a turntable IPA with Cascade, Chinook and Simcoe hops’ citrus, pine, and floral hits for a truly two-speed player.”

The Dreamhouse Records shop will stock a wide range of new vinyl covering various genres from around the world and will sell both current and older releases. If there’s something special you’re after, they can help you track it down. Alongside the vinyl offerings, the space will sell locally roasted coffee from Good Folk and a selection of locally made buns from Sunday Bun Day. Dreamhouse Records is the project of Jon Clifford, a Leyton resident of six years. And is obviously completely crazy. He also has my complete support and respect. Clifford commented, “It might be considered crazy to start a business in such uncertain times,” Any times Jon. Moby Credits Record Stores With Sending Him On His Career Path: Moby admits that for most of his life he has been a fuck-up, he talks quite openly about it in his Noise11.com interview, but the one thing that turned him around and put him on his career path was working in a record store. Moby came from a poor background, a broken home and was drawn to drugs and alcohol at an early age. It wasn’t until he started working in a record store when he found his true passion. It gave him a broad appreciation of musical genres and introduced him to a range of international artists he was unfamiliar with. In the Noise11 interview Moby says, “I had a lot of weird musical experiences that took me out of my comfort zone in a really wonderful way. I thought I was going to be playing in punk rock bands and teaching philosophy. I really thought that was my life path. In the early 80s, apart from hard-core punk bands, I was into The Smiths, Aztec Camera, Echo and the Bunnymen. It was working in a record store, beginning work as a DJ and spending time in New York that kind of opened me up to musical traditions that I didn’t have a lot of experience with.
HK | From the Beatles to Elton John: Oldest DJ’s storied career: Ray Cordeiro considers himself the luckiest radio DJ in the world. In a storied career spanning over 70 years in Hong Kong, Cordeiro has interviewed superstars including the Beatles and Elton John, and even received an MBE — an order of the British empire for outstanding achievement or service to the community — from Queen Elizabeth. Cordeiro, who holds the Guinness world record for the world’s longest-working DJ, retired last month at the age of 96. “I’ve been talking all my life about music and all, and I’d never thought that I would retire. I never thought that I was getting older,” he said. Cordeiro was born in 1924 in Hong Kong and is of Portuguese descent. His musical tastes as a child were influenced by his brother who was 10 years older and collected records from groups like the Mills Brothers and the Andrews Sisters. …“When he’s not home and I played his records, I had to be very, very careful, because if I broke it he would get awfully angry,” Cordeiro said. “I grew up with his music.”
Dave Chappelle’s poignant ‘8:46’ special is being pressed on limited-edition vinyl: The release comes from Jack White’s label Third Man Records. A year on from its debut on YouTube, Dave Chappelle has teamed up with Jack White’s label, Third Man Records, to release a limited-edition vinyl pressing of his special 8:46. The release, which is limited to 846 numbered copies, is pressed on a tri-coloured black, red and green vinyl with a white splatter. There will also be a standard black vinyl, for which a pressing number has not been offered. Both versions are available for pre-order, and will ship on October 29. Produced by Netflix, the 27-minute special was released on YouTube last June. It was recorded a week before its release at Chapelle’s home in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In it, he addresses the murder of George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on May 25, 2020. The title ‘8:46’ is a reference to the amount of time Chauvin spent kneeling on Floyd’s neck.
