For Local Record Store, “Record Store Day” Means “Community”: As of 2017, four independently owned record stores in the state of Wyoming have signed the “Record Store Day Pledge:” Ernie November #6 in Cheyenne, Mammoth Music Inc in Riverton, 2nd Chance CDs in Sheridan, and Sonic Rainbow CDs in Casper. According to the official Record Store Day website, these stores have agreed to act “in the spirit of Record Store Day, and sell the commercial Record Store Day releases to their physical customers, on Record Store Day; not to gouge them, or hold product back to sell them online.”

Ten years ago we could have ended up in a situation where we didn’t have any record shops. But it has had a good effect, and year on year it’s getting bigger. There were 280 independent record shops when it started, now there are 390.”

Many independently owned record stores will officially participate in Record Store Day, offering exclusive vinyl record releases and promotional materials such as CDs and T-shirts and hosting giveaways or special events. FWB Vintage Records in Fort Walton Beach, Central Square Records in Seaside and Revolver Records in Pensacola are among the official participants in the holiday.
Beverly Records to bring music history to future fans: [Chicago’s] Beverly Records continues to link the rich history of vinyl to the future with a complementary Vinyl Fair and a record release party by local up-and-comers Railway Gamblers, all in one day, Saturday, April 22. “Our pocket of the city is so blessed to have a hip and supportive record store like Beverly Records,” said Matt Fricks of Railway Gamblers. “Having a real vinyl 45 to autograph as part of a record release party is the stuff of dreams.” While doors open at 8 a.m. to the long lines at Beverly Records for International Record Store Day, at 11 a.m. Cullinan’s Stadium Club opens the Vinyl Fair. Success breeds ingenuity, and the further expansion of inventory has meant “pop-up record bins” at Cullinan’s Stadium Club, next door at 11612 S. Western Ave. It’s also meant an “Antique Electronics Answer Man” on site and more.
Viewpoint: Banquet’s Jon Tolley on what Record Store Day really means to the music industry: I was recently interviewed on Sky News about ‘the vinyl revival’. Normally such interviews are feel-good stories about a nostalgic time when people used to buy records. And I’m always at pains to point out this is as modern day as it gets. I point out that records are the antidote to a culture where everything is immediate, where there’s a race to the bottom on price, and service and meaning are forgotten. That now, the emotional experience of buying and owning a piece of art is more important than it ever was.

Young Entrepreneurs: Talking shop with DIG owner Sarah Jones: Sarah Jones, a Galesburg native and Knox College graduate, got a taste of city life while living in Milwaukee, but she found a new groove as a business owner back in her hometown. She opened her store, DIG, four years ago at 70 N. Seminary St. in downtown Galesburg. In it, she houses eclectic inventory ranging from vinyl records and retro housewares to handmade jewelry and local artwork. This week, Jones will launch a new venture: turning part of her building into a fully equipped record store, just in time for Record Store Day on April 22.
Celebrate Record Store Day 2017 Reggae Music Event With VP Records: VP Records will release two limited edition vinyl titles and host its vinyl only, sound system celebration to commemorate Record Store Day 2017. Record Store Day 2017 will take place at VP Records’ retail outlet at 170-21 Jamaica Avenue, New York from 11am to 5pm on Saturday April 22, 2017. The event will feature an all-star cast of DJs including; Massive B, Road International, Tippatone and King Addies. Sound System will be provided by Pretty Posse (Yellow Bird).
