Rough Trade NYC, New York’s premier Independent Record Store and concert venue, announce an exclusive Record Store Day event featuring Wayne Coyne of THE FLAMING LIPS, signing copies of their new Warner Bros. Records album KING’S MOUTH: MUSIC AND SONGS. Their 15th studio album will be released on colored vinyl on April 13th in a limited edition pressing of 4,000 copies. The special solid gold vinyl edition serves as the only version of the title in the marketplace until July and marks the first new music from the band since 2017’s Oczy Mlody. King’s Mouth sees the iconoclastic outfit once again tread uncharted territory. These twelve new originals are threaded together by cinematic narration courtesy of The Clash’s Mick Jones. This music and it’s concept parallels front man Wayne Coyne’s immersive art installation of the same name.

Collectors are eager to sift through store shelves for rare releases and limited pressings this Record Store Day. The annual event has celebrated all things vinyl, the culture of record stores and the role they’ve play within the music community for the last 12 years. A diverse and extensive list of about 400 new albums pressed for Record Store Day 2019 have fans and collectors hyped. People are also talking about an adorable, albeit highly criticized, miniature turntable after RSD posted a photo of the exclusive item on its Facebook page. The Crosley model runs on batteries and plays 3-inch records pressed in Japan, where other pocket-sized players have been popular. Despite its Instagram-worthiness, the turntable has not received the most positive reception from audiophiles, who question its quality.

Bowling Green, KY | Cage the Elephant set for in-store appearance at Mellow Matt’s: A few days after the release of its fifth album, Bowling Green-based rock band Cage the Elephant will make an appearance at Mellow Matt’s Music & More. Matt Pfefferkorn, owner of Mellow Matt’s, said the Grammy Award-winning band will be at his store from 6 to 8 p.m. April 25, six days after the release of its fifth album, “Social Cues,” to meet fans and sign autographs. Mellow Matt’s is at 1200 Smallhouse Road. Pfefferkorn said anyone who pre-orders a copy of the album at Mellow Matt’s will receive a wristband that guarantees a meeting with the band. “That way, whether you come at 6 or 7 o’ clock, you’ll be able to see the band,” he said. Cage the Elephant made an in-store appearance at Mellow Matt’s in 2015 to promote its previous album, “Tell Me I’m Pretty,” which went on to win the Grammy for best rock album. Pfefferkorn said he is thrilled to have the chance to host the band again.

Norfolk, UK | Norfolk’s Record Store Day crew shrinks from three to one within a year: The number of record shops in Norfolk taking part in Record Store Day will shrink from three to just one in 2019 as a Holt retailer has been forced to bow out. Holt Vinyl Vault owner Andrew Worsdale said he was “very disappointed” his shop was not able to take part in the Saturday, April 13 event. The Cromer Road shop has taken part in Record Store Day for the past two years, along with around 250 others across the country, with many hosting live DJs and bands and running special promotions. Mr Worsdale, 58, said: “We assumed we would be taking part again – we meet all the criteria and we sell plenty of newly-pressed vinyl.” He said they were barred from taking part by Record Store Day organisers, the Soho-based Entertainment Retail Association (ERA), because they did not sell enough newly-produced music.

Huddersfield, UK | Here’s what’s happening at Vinyl Tap for Record Store Day: Huddersfield music shop teams up with The Parish and Epicure Bar and Kitchen. Music-lovers in Kirklees are counting down to this year’s Record Store Day, which brings together local musicians and businesses for a day of live performances and exclusive offers. The annual event takes place on Saturday, April 13 and will see participating record stores and venues across the UK and the rest of the world showcasing local talent as well as offering limited-edition releases and re-releases. Huddersfield’s Vinyl Tap will be hosting a day of live music at its town centre store, headlined by hip- hop artist Ben Goodwin, otherwise known as ExP. Fresh from his recent appearance on Romesh Ranganathan’s Hip-Hop Saved My Life podcast, he will be releasing his new album Remarkable/Unremarkable exclusively on limited edition green vinyl at the event. Also playing live will be The Sheratons, Dirty Freud and Dead Naked Hippies.

Ashland, OH | 88.9 WRDL to celebrate Vinylthon April 13: Ashland University’s WRDL college radio station will take part in the 4th annual Vinylthon on Saturday, April 13. Just like years past, various hosts and personalities will take turns spinning tracks exclusively from vinyl records. Beginning at midnight Saturday morning, everyone who tunes into 88.9 WRDL will hear the crack of needle meeting vinyl. A plethora of hosts will play songs they’ve pulled from their vault of recognizable albums spanning decades of history. All of this will last a total of 24 hours. This isn’t the first time 88.9 WRDL has participated in Vinylthon. This is their third year of participation. “In the past two years, we’ve been a Golden Slipmat Award Winner, which is awarded to stations that go 24 hours,” said Derek Wood, General Manager of 88.9 WRDL. “The first year we were only one of 12 stations to do so.” Wood spoke of how participating in Vinylthon brings an opportunity to play music that isn’t normally heard on their college radio station.

Prince’s soundtrack to Versace fashion show recreated for Record Store Day: The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold played at a show at Paris fashion week in 1995. A sought-after soundtrack created by Prince for a Versace catwalk is to be released on tape to mark Record Store Day. The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold was originally distributed as a promotional tape to those who attended the Versace collection show at Paris fashion week in July 1995. Envisioned by the late musician as a DJ mixtape, the record included remixes, segues and sequencing to soundtrack parts of that show. It has been recreated by The Prince Estate, NPG Records and Sony Legacy Recordings to mark the annual event. The record contains rare material from Prince-related bands like New Power Generation, Madhouse and The NPG Orchestra. An original copy of the album became the most expensive cassette ever sold on the collectors site Discogs, going for £3,075 in 2016.

Music industry revenue grows almost 10% despite decline in physical and download formats: Global music revenues are up almost 10% in a fourth consecutive year of growth for the industry. Streaming helped boost music industry revenues for a fourth consecutive year by almost 10% in 2018, despite the continued decline of physical and download formats. Streaming music on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal grew by 34% in 2018 compared to the previous year, and accounted for almost half (47%) of global music revenue, according to a new report by the International music industry body the IFPI. The continued growth in streaming, which reached 255 million users using paid subscription services last year, offset a 10.1% decline in profits physical and a steep 21.1% in downloads. Despite that, the IFPI reports also revealed the vinyl revival continues across the world, with sales up by 6%. The format now has a 3.6% share of the overall recorded music market.

New Vinyl Edition Of Tears For Fears’ ‘The Hurting’ Set For Release: Originally released on 7 March 1983, the album peaked at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart in its second week of release. A new vinyl edition of Tears For Fears’ landmark 1983 debut, The Hurting is set for release on 24 May through UMC/Mercury. The record has been repressed on 180g vinyl and arrives on the back of the band’s critically-acclaimed UK tour which saw Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal played to thousands of fans. The Hurting was originally released on 7 March 1983, and peaked at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart in its second week of release. The album was certified gold within weeks of its initial release and attained Platinum status in January 1985. Co-produced by Chris ‘Merrick’ Hughes and Ross Cullum, it contains all of Tears for Fears’ first three hit singles, ‘Mad World’, ‘Change’, and ‘Pale Shelter’, all of which reached the top five in the UK. The tracklist also contains a new version of the band’s first single, ‘Suffer the Children’, which had originally been released in 1981.
