Denver, CO | Spin On: A Record Store Day Tribute to Wax Trax: Saturday, April 23, is Record Store Day, a celebration of independent retailers specializing in LPs, CDs and other products that music lovers can actually hold in their hands rather than stream on their phones. But while Wax Trax Records will be participating in the festivities, its two stores, located steps from each other on the 600 block of East 13th Avenue, deserve a salute every day, just as they have since the operation came to life in 1975. For those scoring at home, that’s 47 years, and for more than thirty of them, Wax Trax has been among my favorite haunts — which makes me a relative newcomer compared to customers who’ve been going to the joint since the Gerald Ford administration. But I’m second to none when it comes to my fandom for what has rightly become a Denver institution.

Melbourne, AU | Discrepancy Records celebrates the first full Record Store Day since 2019: Melbourne’s beloved Discrepancy Records in Mont Albert North have been one of COVID-19’s success stories, with the shift towards online generating huge growth. The store’s seamless transition towards the online experience, boasting one of the best online record stores in Australia, has paved a path for others to follow. But it just isn’t quite Record Store Day without some actual crate digging, so they’re now encouraging everyone to get back out there and hold the vinyl in your hands before you make a decision. This Record Store Day they’d like to invite you to venture to sunny Mont Albert North where they’ll be opening their doors and welcoming you in-person for the first time since RSD back in 2019.

Abilene, TX | The only official Record Store Day store within 200 miles is here in Abilene: The annual Record Store Day event is coming up this Saturday, April 23rd, and if you’re looking for a participating store then there’s only one choice within 200 miles. That store just so happens to be one of my favorite places on this entire planet, The Record Guys at 701 S. Leggett. That’s right, The Record Guys is the only participating (Record Store Day) store within 200 miles. The next closest is in Wichita Falls. We’re pretty damn lucky to have such a place in town with people as passionate about music as they are at The Record Guys. Record Store Day is an annual event that celebrates the culture of independently-owned record stores. The day traditionally centers around special releases by a ton of artists from all over the world. These special releases are only sold in participating record stores.

New London, CT | Telegraph celebrates Record Store Day Saturday: For years, Rich Martin, longtime proprietor of New London’s Telegraph Record Shop, has celebrated Record Store Day by hosting live bands in the store. But what happens if there are so many new and special-event records released for Record Store Day that stock is overflowing — and there’s no room for bands to set up? Well, that’ll be the case Saturday for Record Store Day 2022. No bands, just records. Among the hundreds (!) of new releases, limited editions and colored vinyl will be work by artists like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Blondie, Bowie, Buena Vista Social Club, The Cure, Bill Evans, Nicky Minaj, Joni Mitchell, Foo Fighters, The Damned, Opeth, Rain Parade, Lou Reed, Tangerine Dream, Echo & the Bunnymen and Barry White. Good to know: There WILL be a line when doors open at 10 a.m., only four shoppers will be admitted to the store at a time, and free goodies will be distributed while supplies last.

Manchester, UK | ‘We’re gutted’: Withington’s hip record shop and bar is to close down on Record Store Day: Wilderness Records Store is no more. Wilderness Record Store, the neighbourhood bar and record shop in Withington, has said that it will close down – of all days – on Record Store Day this weekend. Its last day of trading will be Saturday (April 23), and it’s inviting regulars to come down and see it off. In a post to its Instagram page, owners said: “It’s with a very heavy heart that we have to announce that Wilderness is closing down. Record Store Day this Saturday 23rd April will be our last day open. Thank you to all of the artists and bands who have played here & all of the DJs who have spun records. “A massive thank you also goes out to every single customer who has supported us ever since we opened back in 2019, who packed themselves in like a tin of sardines to watch gigs, who kept us going throughout a global pandemic, who bought toasties when that was the only way we could reopen, and who continued to come back when the rules subsided.

Nashville, TN | Your Quick-Reference Guide to Record Store Day 2022: Running down special releases and events at mom-and-pop shops across Music City. Since 2008, Record Store Day has put a spotlight on the massive contributions that independent record stores make to the communities lucky enough to have them, via limited-edition special releases only available at mom-and-pop stores. The Record Store Day organization and individual shops kept the ball rolling in 2020 and 2021, with exclusive releases spread among multiple “RSD Drops” dates, and stores enacting protocols to maximize COVID safety. On April 23, RSD will finally return as an in-person, one-day event — sort of. Thanks to the ongoing bottlenecks in the supply chain for vinyl records, some of the more than 300 special titles originally announced have been delayed. The organization planned ahead with an RSD Drops day on June 18 when those late-arriving titles will be offered.

Record Store Day returns on Saturday. This year’s exclusives include an album of unreleased material by the folk singer Karen Dalton, who died in 1993 and was the subject of a critically acclaimed documentary last year; a remastered and expanded version of Stevie Nicks’s “Bella Donna”; a Patti Smith compilation curated by record store employees from across the country; and an unreleased live album by Charles Mingus. Taylor Swift, designated as the event’s global ambassador, is offering a special seven inch of “The Lakes,” a bonus track from her 2020 album “Folklore.” Information about participating record stores — including dozens in and around New York — and the complete list of releases are available at recordstoreday.com.
