Cardiff, UK | Saying goodbye to D’Vinyl Records—a Cardiff institution: When you approach D’Vinyl Records, the first thing you see is not expensive, neatly arranged vinyl. Instead, adorning the entrance to one of Wales’ best loved record shops, is an unassuming window display consisting of CDs and DVDs. Box sets of Fraiser, Cheers and the Star Wars Trilogy peer through the glass like relics from the pre-streaming age. CD copies of Super Furry Animals’ Fuzzy Logic, The Who’s Quick One and a Sam Cook compilation stare back at you as if Spotify never existed. This unpretentious introduction is a key part of the attraction. On Wednesday morning, the first day of trading since owner Steve Collins suddenly announced that this week would be D’Vinyl’s last, the usually quiet shop was teeming with music lovers. All looking for a bargain and for many, to say farewell to a place they’ve loved over the years.

River Falls, MN | He used to be River Falls Chamber CEO. Now he runs a record store: Once the Executive Director of New Richmond’s Chamber of Commerce, Russell Korpela helped start Willow River Blues Fest. In 2008, he organized Willow River Blues and Brews Fest as it combined with the Park Art Fair to host a weekend event that featured breweries, art vendors and live music at Mary Park in New Richmond. This year, Korpela, 62, announced his departure from his more recent position as River Falls Chamber CEO to combine his business and musical know-how in a different way. He formed a vinyl record shop, Grooves, off Main Street in downtown River Falls that opened Thursday. While area thrift shops and antique stores sell vinyl, Grooves is the only business mainly devoted to selling records in River Falls, a college town. A vinyl record collector himself, Korpela said that partly inspired him to open the store.
Los Angeles, CA | VIP Records helped launch Snoop Dogg’s career. Now the shop owner wants to build a museum. In the early 1990s, Kelvin Anderson Sr. built a makeshift recording studio in the back of his Long Beach record store, a vinyl-filled paradise called the World Famous VIP Records on the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. He wanted to give youth a creative outlet in the gang ridden neighborhood. Word quickly spread around the city, and aspiring artists started sprinkling in. Folks like Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Nate Dogg — who were part of a trio dubbed 213, the Long Beach area code at the time—famously cut their first demo there. “Trust me, there were many kids in there,” says Anderson, who’s now 70 and known as “Pops” in the community. “Some were learning how to sing, dance, to be a producer and, in Ricky Harris’ case, how to be a comedian. There was a lot going on. Jamie Foxx used to hang out there. DJ Quik learned how to produce music there. It was a place to come and explore the possibility of being an entertainer.”
