Sam the Record Man sign to go back up this summer, Ryerson University says it has chosen a company to refurbish and install the iconic record store sign at a new location near its original home on Yonge St.: The iconic Sam the Record Man sign will go back on display near its original Yonge St. home later this year, Ryerson University announced Wednesday. Ryerson, which is responsible for the process of restoring and reinstalling the famous piece of Toronto history atop the Toronto Public Health building on the east side of Yonge-Dundas Square, has now chosen a company to do the refurbishment…The neon sign, a 15-metre by 11-metre behemoth featuring two large records with spinning lights, hasn’t been on public display since 2008, when it was taken down from the former site of the late Sam Sniderman’s Toronto music shop on Yonge St. a block north of Dundas St.
A list of Record Store Day 2017 exclusives has emerged: Cranking up for its tenth year of exclusive releases and events, the vinyl merry-go-round of announcements, debate and early morning queues that is Record Store Day is approaching fast. And as in previous years, no build up would be complete without an annual leak or unofficial list, compiled by industrious record elves on Reddit and the gatekeepers of Vinyl Community, Exclaim reports. Seeking comment from the organisers, The Vinyl Factory has reached out to Record Store Day UK’s representative Megan Page, who said that “this is definitely not a definitive list of UK releases.” However, you can be sure many, if not all, of these titles will drop on Record Store Day, which will take place this year on 22nd April.
Vinyl’s comeback – a welcome return or an outdated fad? The reasons behind vinyl’s resurgence are varied because, after all, people buy records for many different reasons. For older generations records may just be the format they are most familiar with, with them also rekindling the feeling of their music-laced youth. However, this doesn’t explain the sudden rise in sales – this lies mostly with the younger generation. Young people are flocking to record stores across the country to purchase their favourite albums on a format that can only be described as real and tangible.
