New vinyl outlet coming to Allentown: A new record store is preparing to open in Allentown. SuperMonkey Recording Co., a local record label, will debut a new store at 813 E. Warrington Avenue on April 22, which is also Record Store Day. Working with a Hilltop Alliance New Business Grant, SuperMonkey will sell a mix of music and merchandise of the artists on its label as well as that of newly printed, national releases. The store will also include a ticket counter for upcoming local concerts along with a selection of guitars and other musical equipment.
Thunder Bay indie record store welcomes Sunrise, Jason Wellwood of New Day says stores in town collaborate to help customers find what they want: The owner of an independent record store in Thunder Bay, Ont., says he welcomes news that Sunrise Records is opening in the city and committing to carrying a large selection of vinyl. New Day Records and Accessories owner Jason Wellwood told CBC he and the staff of the old HMV store used to work together to help customers find what they wanted, and he hopes to have the same relationship with Sunrise. “My clients don’t just like the weird obscure stuff that you’re not going to find at Sunrise,” he said.
Huge event planned at Jacaranda Records for Record Store Day: The Jacaranda has been one of the cornerstones of Liverpool’s music industry for almost 60 years, so it seems fitting it’s hosting an event for Record Store Day this year. The Beatles are known to have strong links with the famous Jacaranda basement and still years on it hosts Liverpool artist and music lovers. This year, they have tripled the amount of releases that they did last year and have three floors of almost 15,000 vinyls, (“Vinyls” is not a word. —Ed.) many of which will are from Liverpool artists.

The show ties in with Record Story Day, the following day, where independent record shops, including Vinyl Tap, will be stocking a range of rare records. Vinyl Tap, a treasure trove for record collectors, learned the news a week ago – but owners were sworn to secrecy until it was announced by DJ Steve Lamacq on his BBC radio show on Tuesday.

Record stores mean a lot to Zane Lowe. Best known for his 12 years as one of the BBC’s top Radio 1 DJs, Lowe uncovered the earliest recordings of hip-hop by devotedly riffling through record store bins, and he found the way to Nirvana by awkwardly humming the guitar riff to “Smells Like Teen Spirit” to his local record store clerk. Moving to London from New Zealand as a radio DJ in 1997, he worked at a record store himself before joining MTV2 and, later, Radio 1. Now, as the the head of Apple’s global streaming radio channel, he sees Beats 1 mimicking the expertise of that behind-the-counter guru in today’s age of streaming libraries.
