Local record store turns vinyl into gold: In an age in which more Americans are turning to subscription services and online streaming for their music, one Baltimore record store is making money the old fashion way: selling vinyl. The Sound Garden, which is located at 1616 Thames Street in Fells Point, boasts a diverse selection of over 5,000 vinyl LPs and a wide variety of CDs, movies and cassettes that has allowed it to stay in business since 1993 despite a digital revolution that has closed several popular record stores in Washington, New York and other parts of the country. Customers who enter the warehouse style box store are greeted with the sounds of the 1980s and 1990s and can thumb through albums much like music lovers did 30 years ago. And while management says the store is not doing the same business it did in the 1990s, sales are high enough to keep things humming.

Thousands of records were available in different price ranges. A DJ was on scene spinning everyone’s favorites and taking requests. Cratediggers Rejoice! Record Raid Coming To New Orleans Jazz Museum: Looking for some new vinyl to add to your collection? Rejoice, because Record Raid is back. On Sunday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint, record vendors from far and wide are coming to town to satisfy local music lovers’ cravings. The record show is bringing vendors from all across the Gulf to sell LP records, CDs, cassettes, and more. Record Raid started in 2010 as the WTUL record fair, later to be named RECORD RAID and run as a non-for-profit LLC. The event happens quarterly, with record shows which “welcome all forms of recorded media from all vintages and musical styles.” It’s remained a one-of-a-kind event in Louisiana and plans to expand in the future to Baton Rouge and Metairie.
The Run Out returns for DIY music festival, label market and dubplate cutting: A one-day celebration of independent music and culture. Launched in 2017 as an independent alternative to Record Store Day, The Run Out will return next month for another one-day festival celebrating the independent music community in South London and beyond. Taking place at Copeland Park, Bussey Building and Rye Wax record shop in Peckham, The Run Out will be centred around a label market featuring a selection of independent enterprises including Rhythm Section, YAM Records, Local Talk Records, Strut Records, Hyperdub Records, Wavey Garms, Done London and On the Corner.
New Decemberists Album Has “Impeach The President” Etched On Vinyl, Thanks To Robert Mueller In Liner Notes: The Decemberists are more known for their songs about 19th century chimney sweeps than contemporary politics, but they’re not afraid to get political on their synth-heavy new album I’ll Be Your Girl, which officially came out yesterday. As Pitchfork reports, the vinyl edition of the LP comes with the words “Impeach The President” etched into side A of the record and “Bring On The Matriarchy” cut into side B. The liner notes for the album also thank Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who’s currently head of the Special Counsel investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections.

As I made my way to it, the busyness of the market ensured I was lost in its bustle. Thankfully, the faint sound of 80s music brought me closer to the spot. It was Gazab ka hai din from the Aamir Khan-starrer Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) played loud and clear now from the gold-shaded speaker of a vintage gramophone. A tiny shutter opens up to a room that is sure to sweep music lovers off their feet. Stacked up on the little shelves within the room are thousands of vinyl records from different generations, genres, and languages. “We have at least 5,000 records just in English. And then a majority of the records include Raja sir’s (Ilaiyaraaja) music. We have all the movie songs, at least one piece will definitely be there with us,” says Venkatesh, the shop owner’s nephew, who now manages the store.
