Minneapolis, MN | Famed Minneapolis record store name-dropped on FOX’s new show: The longtime record store wasn’t aware ahead of its mention. FOX’s new TV drama, “Doc,” name-dropped a famed Minneapolis record store in its latest episode. The mention of Electric Fetus, which has sold records in Minnesota since 1968, came during the episode that air Tuesday evening. A patient in the show mentioned how much of a fan he was of Prince, naming albums like Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, and of course, Purple Rain “Controversy,” “1999” and “Purple Rain.” Actor Scott Wolf (playing the remarkably well-informed Dr. Richard Miller) later said this to the patient: “I’ll tell you what, once you heal you can hit up the Electric Fetus for some vinyl. Prince practically lived there.” The beloved local record store quoted the line, adding: “Just what the #DocOnFOX ordered!!” An Instagram user asked the store if they knew about the mention ahead of time, and Electric Fetus replied that they had “no clue.”

Nashville, TN | First Bite: 888. The vinyl listening room at the JW Marriott is a vibey addition to the local sushi scene: This First Bite is coming along a little later than usual — 888 opened at 800 Clark Place back in September — but with the recent sushi boom around town, my planned visit kind of fell through the cracks of my calendar. Plus, 888 is intentionally a little difficult to find. …I was already aware of the vinyl-listening-lounge element of the restaurant/bar, with its collection of more than 2,000 albums and state-of-the-art sound system. But when I walked in the door and realized the DJ was spinning one of my favorite Tower of Power LPs, I knew I was going to like this place! The wheels of steel spin behind a long sushi bar with two talented swordsmen working their knives to create nigiri, sashimi and maki rolls.
Bloomington, IN | Bring your favorite vinyl records for Fossilized Frequencies show and tell: Fossilized Frequencies hosted its monthly Record Show & Tell event Saturday at the McCalla School. The events are informal; attendees typically get together and play different records every time they attend. Guests enjoy talking about genres, album covers, where they obtained the records they bring and what the records mean to them. Jack Kilby, who prepares galleries for University Collections at McCalla, hosts the free, all-ages event every third Saturday of the month, welcoming anyone to stop by to learn about all genres of music — even if they do not have records of their own to share. “Even if they don’t have records, we have a crate of records that they can dig through and find something they might like,” Kilby said. “It’s a good place for community and just record nerds in general.”
