UK music sales figures rise for the first time since 2004: Sales of vinyl and a huge rise in streaming saw music sales rise for the first time since 2004 last year. The retail value of UK music rose from £1.03 billion in 2014 to £1.06 billion in 2015 after vinyl sales jumped by 64 percent. A total of 26.8 billon songs were also streamed, representing a rise of 82 per cent according to the trade body BPI.
Take a look inside Container Records, London’s newest vinyl store: With a number of the capital’s more well-known record stores being clustered in a central locale – Phonica, Sounds Of The Universe, Reckless Records and If Music to name a few – it’s easy to forget about the smaller gems that can mix it up with the best. Container Records is a new outlet in London’s southern quarters joining stores like Rat Records, Rye Wax and Casbah hoping to turn heads away from the bright lights of the city centre towards their shipping container, full of the finest dance, rock and leftfield.
Record stores are in a spin as vinyl sales keep on growing: Record sales in Britain have continued to go in one direction as vinyl stores celebrated an eighth successive year of soaring trade. Stores such as Southsea’s Pie & Vinyl have experienced growing success in recent years. In 2015 vinyl sales increased by 64% – with shops cashing in £2.1m revenue in the process.
Made it to the new Cheapo? Here’s how it compares: Beyond the DVD/Blu-ray stash is a large vinyl selection that takes up most of the store’s visual display, looming over a landscape of media from the entrance. There is a floor-to-ceiling window near the front door to give some natural light and to connect to the neighborhood. But, for the most part, being inside Cheapo is an escape from the outside world, its own realm of forgotten and discarded hard-format media where the dedicated can treasure hunt at discounted prices.
