Lovedrug:
The TVD First Date

Lovedrug play Jammin Java this Wednesday, 4/18.

“I personally LOVE vinyl for so many reasons, really. To begin with, vinyl is anti-ADHD. There is no easy way to skip a track, no shuffle play.”

“Don’t get me wrong; I love my iPod on tour and I use Spotify for hours a day. But there is something about experiencing an album as an album. Side A and a Side B. Having to take in the full presentation of an artist’s work the way they wanted it to be presented. Nothing else to do but pour over the huge, beautiful 12″x12” artwork.

Yes!! It slows down the day, it calms hyperactivity, and it just makes you want to drink in the music; soak it all up.

And how many songs did I not like right away but, because it was stuck in between two that I did and I had to just let the record play, I ultimately discovered that I loved it because I couldn’t just hit skip on the iPod?

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Fiona Apple at the Warner Theatre, 6/26

Sixteen years after the release of her breakthrough debut album Tidal, Fiona Apple is back on tour for her fourth studio album The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, more commonly known as simply The Idler Wheel…, set for release on June 19th.

She’s coming to the Warner Theatre on Tuesday, June 26th, and tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am, but we have a pair of tickets for one lucky winner to win before they even go on sale.

The defiant, piano-playing chanteuse was catapulted to fame in the late ’90s with the release of the Grammy-winning “Criminal,” the most successful single from Tidal. When the album was released in 1996, Apple was a mere 19 years old, but the provocatively sexual, confessional album earned her critical acclaim for its naughty, brooding, sophisticated work.

TVD Live: The Magnetic Fields, the 9:30 Club, 4/9

Since 1991, The Magnetic Fields, have been charming the pants off everyone found along the highway strip and beyond, with their rich blend of genre-crossed indie/noise/synth pop filling the 9:30 Club on a Monday night.

The heart of the band is predicated by Steve Merritt’s lyrical genius and backed by Claudia Gonson’s instrumental talent. “We’re here to play songs off of our new album, Love at the Bottom of the Sea,” Merritt asserted very early on in the show, but the performance actualize was a delightful mix of old and new songs, lots of heckling fans, and enough stage banter to keep hardcore fans beaming for days after.

The Quartet Devotchka opened for The Magnetic Fields with with a sound that is usually likened to gypsy or circus music, but I liked the last couple of songs that I heard, which were a bit darker and more burlesque than I had anticipated they might sound.

Jazz Fest Additions
and Subtractions

As we count down the days to the annual extravaganza, there are always little tweaks being made to the schedule by the team at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

Earlier it was announced the Eddie Vedder was forced to bow out due to health issues and was replaced by Jimmy Buffett playing a rare acoustic set. Today the festival staff announced two more changes. Levon Helm and Bunny Wailer are no longer on the schedule. But Ziggy Marley (pictured) and the Warren Haynes Band have been added.

Both changes are for the second weekend. Marley will appear May 4 and Haynes on May 5.

TVD’s 10 Weeks of Record Store Day Vinyl Giveaways: The Naked and Famous, Passive Me, Agressive You

Apparently there’s some big Day this coming Saturday around which we’ve been foisting vinyl upon the collective masses for 10 weeks now, and we’ve got a bunch of stuff this last, 10th week that we’ll be offering up as a bit of a fireworks finale to the whole shebang.

Auckland, New Zealands’ The Naked and Famous released their debut LP Passive Me, Agressive You in 2010 on their own Somewhat Damaged label, and we’ve got a copy of the glorious picture disc edition to award one of you.

To say Passive Me, Agressive You was a bit of a success in the band’s native New Zealand is a bit of an understatement, it seems. In 2011, the band garnered six nominations at the New Zealand Music Awards for Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Best Group, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Best Alternative Album and the People’s Choice Award.

They were also nominated for the NZ On Air Best Music Video and won the MAINZ Best Engineer Award and the MAINZ Best Producer Award.

TVD Live: Nada Surf
at the 9:30 Club, 4/10

There’s something so oddly comforting about Nada Surf. Like that cool friend you have, the one you often stay up all night with talking, spinning records, and drinking whiskey, the records that the Surf has put out over their 20-year tenure are solid, engaging, and always have you coming back for more.

The band came to the 9:30 Club on Tuesday in support of their latest release, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, this time with two extra members in tow, guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices) and instrumentalist Martin Wenk (Calexico), which filled out the live sound quite nicely.

Lead singer/guitarist Matthew Caws has that effortless voice, one that beckons the heart, and writes lyrics that appeal to the brain, while bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot put forth a backbeat underneath it all. Together, its a package that creates emotional songs that rock your face off.

New vinyl from New Order: 18 minutes of Elegia

Originally released in a five minute version on 1985’s Low Life, New Order have released a nearly 18 minute vinyl version of “Elegia,” a tribute to Ian Curtis previously only available in a 2002 boxset, and a 2008 expanded CD issue of Low Life.

Latin for elegy, “Elegia” is certainly regal and elegiac. The b-sides (as they used to be called) are a John Peel session version of Power, Corruption, & Lies track “5-8-6”, as well as another track dedicated to Curtis, “Him” from Movement.

Fantastic. Buy it here.

Band of the Week:
Gap Dream

This simply stunning debut album from Gap Dream is looking like it will get an official release through UK label Sounds Of Sweet Nothing in the coming months. The trippy organs and fascinating instrumental arrangements that flow throughout this self-titled debut album make this listen a truly mesmerizing experience.

Cleveland’s own Gabriel Fulvimar plays on and writes all the songs here except for a wonderful cover of The Squires’ “Go Ahead.” His talents really are something and this album really needs to be heard. —James

TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

Today will be my first day back on the Empire Polo Grounds in a few years. I’m sure much has changed since Beck, Morrissey, Tool, Rage, and The Chemical Bros. headlined the very first, very fun, and the very under attended Coachella Valley Music & Arts Annual Festival. One thing I can assure you has not changed, some kids are gonna have a mighty rocking time!

Coachella is first and foremost about one thing—California! Yes, Coachella is ours! This festival (like life) is not all perfect, but in many ways what could be better than three days in the desert sun with the coolest music, hosted by our pals at Goldenvoice?

Paul T, Skip, and Rick Van Satin (RIP) alway knew and respected the main ingredient, a three letter word; FUN! I must admit at 50, having fun can often be a challenge. Over the years I’ve picked up a few “Californian” traits and one of them is knowing how to party “so-cal” style.

I’m sure at some point today I will be yearning for Rick Van Satin’s private room loaded with candy, chips, soda, and reeking of the choicest “cron.” Rick, I know you’re up there watching over us with a million dollar smile.

So, here’s my first of a 2 part Coachella playlist. I’m sure there are tons of these all over internet and Spotify, but I approached this playlist as a parents guide to the festival—for music fans with roots, but who might not be as hip as festival organizer, Paul T.

Coachella! It’s a LA passtime, it’s a tradition, a California rock ‘n roll celebration, and a fucking big multi-million dollar party. Long live Coachella!!

Fans of Tame Impala, Toro Y Moi, or with any artistic sensibility at all will be captivated by Hume’s DIY experimentation consisting of dual drummers, vocals, electric bass, and electric guitar, often decontextualized and redefined through otherworldly stereo processing.

Hume are the perfect opener for Captured Tracks’ Widowspeak and Slumberland Records’ Crystal Stilts on 4/14 at The Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are still available and it’s just $12 to see three amazing bands. Doors open at 8pm.

The luminous sounds
of Silo Halo

Is it just me or has DC been getting a little moody lately?

I’m not talking about the palpable, election year angst in our nation’s capital or any gloom related to the city’s draconian budget cuts. I’m referring to an emerging strain of fiercely independent, DC-area bands with a predilection for darker sounds and emotions, not to mention a propensity for spindly guitar arpeggios and plenty of volume.

Silo Halo is one of the newer bands in this growing scene, which to my mind, also includes Buildings, Lenorable, Sansyou, Washerwoman, and the John Carpenter-obsessed, synth-noise deviants known as Screen Vinyl Image (by the way, more evidence that something is definitely afoot: Slumberland heroes Lorelei have reformed and are prepping a new album.)

But while the members of Silo Halo clearly have more than a passing interest in effects pedals, the band’s obvious affection for the late 80s/early 90s U.K. shoegaze scene is just one of their musical reference points. In seeing a recent Silo Halo live show, I was struck by the realization that the band probably owe just as much to the doomed romanticism of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave as they do to early Ride and Lush.

TVD Recommends:
LUMEN8Anacostia, 4/14

You’re forgiven if, as a DC native, you’re a bit surprised to see the influx of the dynamic arts working its way into the historic Uniontown neighborhood of Anacostia. Yet, this underappreciated portion of DC proper is playing host to LUMEN8Anacostia, a “noon to midnight festival of light, art, music and fun” which is set to upend a few common misperceptions of the often troubled neighborhood.

LUMEN8Anacostia is free and open to the general public—and there’s even something in store for you vinyl obsessives tomorrow as well.

From their website, “LUMEN8Anacostia will inaugurate a series of creative spaces in the commercial corridor of Historic Anacostia from noon to midnight Saturday, April 14. The corridor will come alive with illuminated storefronts, landmarks, and murals.”

Weekend Shots!

Looking for some live music in Chicago this weekend? We’ve got you covered. Check out this weekend’s featured show along with a more extensive weekend list below!

FANG ISLAND at the Beat Kitchen, 4/13

Brooklyn’s Fang Island began as an art school project, but has evolved into a force to be reckoned with. The quintet set out to “make music for people who like music”, and with their 2010 self-titled release, they seem to have achieved that goal. The group harmonies, chanted vocals, and occasional hand claps all seem to gel with the pop roots of classic rock. Check out the track “Careful Crossers”, from the debut album, below.

You can pick up a copy of Fang Island on 180g 12” online for just $15, as well as their limited edition 7” for $8.
