TVD’s The Idelic Hour with Jon Sidel

Greetings from Laurel Canyon!

Well, of course Tuesday was Valentines Day, and of course I could not resist putting some kind of twist to a playlist of love songs.

For some reason when I started digging through crates I starting thinking about “trouble.” However, on this Valentine’s Day I find myself without much trouble in mind or drama to brag about. I’m a geek and was day dreaming about the kind of love that Marvin Gaye seems to sing of—a bum in love, trouble man, feelin’ tainted and dank.

Funny, in many ways I approached the muse of heartbreak with a smooth and carefree approach. The result is simple—just a solid “Idelic Hour” of music—one chapter in a series of playlists dedicated to the assorted colors of love.

Feels warm and cozy to listen to these love gems after Valentine’s dates and the chocolates having been consumed…

Dave Grohl clarifies
his Grammy Award acceptance speech

I guess some people took Dave Grohl’s Grammy speech out of context and thought he was trying to bash music not made by humans playing traditional rock instruments. Lighten up, folks. Here’s Dave’s clarification. And you gotta love that his complimentary close quotes 2012 David Lee Roth wisdom. Dig:

Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin’ with Lil’ Wayne…meeting Cyndi Lauper’s adorable mother…the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet…..much too much to recap. It’s really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there’s one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance…and then saying this:

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do… It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey……I’m a drummer, remember?

TVD Live: The Kills
10th Anniversary Show at Terminal 5, 2/11

The Kills are an angst-ridden trans-Atlantic two-piece consisting of the unlocked-at-the-hips Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart. They manage to exist as simultaneously retro and post-modern and are unclassifiably compared with post-punk, indie-blues, and the all-encompassing garage rock genres while referencing the Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, the Nuggets anthology, Shirley Bassey, and traditional American blues.

Hince stands out for his fifty-year-old Hagstrom and Hofner gits, minimal guitar rig, and retro Boss guitar pedals while playing with both time and space through feedback loops, overdrive, fuzz, delays, and rhythmic sound distortions. His sound, filtered through vintage Fender and divided by thirteen amps into Marshall stacks, has both texture and tone in abundance. Only Cream on Disraeli Gears had more.

As with Y3, there is no bass, so Hince plays top heavy chords through a mixer and sometimes channels ersatz drums though a beat box. Moss—no, that is Hince’s wife—hart is the cool girl everyone wants to be, with a way-too-many cigarettes and tequilas voice and a dynamic stage presence that eschews blatant gender-stereotypes. Her unmistakably feminine presence elevates Mosshart beyond her more commercial contemporaries.

Together for ten plus years, The Kills sound has evolved from a medley of alternately hypnotic and jolting hooks (No Wow, Alphabet Pony) to riff- and tone-driven melodies interrogated by detached and mournful lyrics.

Collapsing New Buildings: Fad Gadget Tribute takes NYC
in March

Envoy Enterprises, NP Contemporary Art, and Mute pay tribute to Frank Tovey / Fad Gadget with a three-part project series in homage to Frank Tovey – founder of the 1970s/1980s British electronic group Fad Gadget, marking the 10 year anniversary of the pioneer’s death.

Summoning a diverse group of artists and musicians who have been both directly and indirectly influenced by Tovey, the series will take place from March 1st through to April 8th, 2012 featuring a group exhibition, live music performances, and a film screening. All events are free and open to the public.

FGFt was inspired in 2010 by the film Fad Gadget by Frank Tovey, a documentary produced by the Frank Tovey Estate and Mute, and directed by Morgan Tovey Frost. The documentary incited the possibility of paying tribute to a pioneer of the underground and post-punk music scenes who incorporated innovative electronic textures, Kafka-esque lyrics, and elaborately visceral performances.

Weekend Shots!
Carnival Edition, Part II

Well the big weekend is here and there’s more music happening than one person, or even a team of people, can devour. Here’s a look at my top picks for where you’ll be.

Tonight, the Not So Super Super Hero Costume Party is going down at the AllWays Lounge. This is a costume party featuring the Not So Super Super Hero All-Stars, Rotary Downs (pictured), the Lagniappe Brass Band and other special guests. This group really knows how to throw a party. So remember, if you don’t wear a costume, you can’t get in.

If you are not inclined to dress up just yet, there’s plenty more musical action on tap. Tipitina’s has the Funky Meters and if there’s one thing that will get you in the Carnival groove it’s hearing the funky foursome doing those Mardi Gras standards that you love.

Weekend Shots!

Hey, you animals. The weekend is finally here and you might want to treat yourself. If so, you picked the best weekend to actually get out of bed and have a night out in your city. Cleveland has a lot to offer this weekend, so let’s check it out just in case Ghost Rider II sells out.

The best event this weekend has got to be Brite Winter Festival happening in Ohio City on Saturday evening. The night is going to be packed with bands preforming in shops, restaurants, and an outdoor stage. Now I know what you’re thinking…but, with bands like The Lighthouse & The Whaler, The Modern Electric, and Bethesda showing up it is definitely worth the cold, night air.

Aside from great music there will also be showings of great local and international art. The festivities start at 5. Support Cleveland and swing by; we’ll save you a spot by the fire!

Weekend Shots!

Looking for some live music in Chicago this weekend? We’ve got you covered. Check out this weekend’s featured show along with a more extensive weekend list below!

If you live in or around Chicago, you have probably noticed that this weekly piece offers a far from complete list of the shows in the Windy City. Unfortunately, there are just way too many establishments hosting talented musicians every weekend to cover them all. (Not a bad problem to have, honestly.) With that said, when a really awesome show is brought to my attention somewhere other than my standard 10 or so venues, I’m going to do my best to make sure it gets covered.

THE PHARMACY @ The Crown Tap Room, 2/18

Seattle’s psychedelic punk trio, The Pharmacy, will be rolling through Chicago this weekend as part of a national tour supporting their latest EP, Dig Your Grave. After releasing 3 albums and a handful of 7”s, Dig Your Grave hits hard, and offers insight into what can be expected from the group’s upcoming full-length LP, Stoned & Alone, due out later this year.

You can pick up the new 7” EP, “Dig Your Grave” for just $5 through Kind Turkey Records.

TVD Recommends: Amen Dunes at Siberia
tonight, 2/17

For you New Orleanians in need of a one-night break from the Mardi Gras Mambo, skip the Krewe d’Etat tonight and make a stop into Siberia. Amen Dunes, yet another New Yorker making his rounds in the south, is performing alongside atmospheric post-rock outfit, This Will Destroy You.

I sympathize with Amen Dunes, the solo project of Damon McMahon, who at one point felt so caught up in the NYC music scene he had to escape the city to find a sense of freedom in his music (see, DIA). In 2011 he released Through Donkey Jaw, marking his eventual return to New York.

Uploading it to my ipod, I see why my editor forwarded it to me. Psychedelic experimentation and meandering vocals at their best, the opening track “Baba Yaga” whets your appetite for music that is abrasive in a strangely affable way.

Show of the Week: Deering & Down
Album Release at
The Hi-Tone, 2/18

This Saturday night, local duo Deering & Down will release their new record Out There Somewhere at a show at the Hi-Tone. The two promise some special Memphis musical guests to accompany them throughout the night.

They did the new record at Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studio here in town; Mitchell even helped with horn arrangements before his death two years ago. Willie’s son, Boo, co-produced the album with the band.

You can check out some of the tracks from the new album over on the band’s SoundCloud. Looks like the show will be a lot of fun with all the guests, so come on out and support the best soul/r&b duo in town. Doors at 8:30. $5/18+

Brand new from These Furrows, “No Invitation No Welcome”

Hard to pigeon-hole outfit, These Furrows will release their new single, “No Invitation No Welcome” backed with “3:16” via Underdogs Music on 26th March. “No Invitation No Welcome” is also available now as a free download from their website.

Both tracks are taken from their debut album, Treasures which was recorded under the guidance of rock veteran Tony Platt (AC/DC, Motorhead) and mixed by Chris Sheldon (Biffy Clyro, Foo Fighters). It is expected that this long awaited first album will see the light of day in June this year.

For those not familiar with the band, they are fronted by Darryl Reid (guitar and vocals) and backed with Danny Cooper (bass), Jack Brewin (drums) and Calum Price (lead guitar and backing vocals). Their sound really defies easy genre-fication, as their set drifts from rock and post-hardcore to more tuneful melodic ramblings, all built on a quirky indie foundation. Like I said, hard to pin down!

TVD Ticket Giveaway: Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def at the 9:30 Club, 2/20

At the beginning of 2012, he took the name Yasiin Bey. But his bent toward social consciousness stays true to the grammatical modifier we “most definitely” know him as, Mos Def. The actor and emcee will appear onstage Monday, February 20th, at the 9:30 Club.

Mos Def comes from a pedigree of politically aware lyrical artists originating out of Golden Era of Hip-Hop. In New York, where the art form took shape, there were rappers that quickly shot to the mainstream (Beastie Boys, Kid ‘n Play). And then there emerged a sub-culture of artists that rejected the “rapper identity.” These artists became sort of a side effect of the pop celebrity that record labels took ease with marketing.

Instead of the glittery, commercialized oeuvre groomed for wider audiences, emcees including Def took to Afrocentricity and racial injustice for subject matter. Like forebears Public Enemy, Mos Def’s lyrics spoke of the consequences of violence as opposed to the act itself.

TVD Live: Austin Lucas at The Well, 2/11

I caught up with Austin Lucas at a new basement bar and music venue in Knoxville called The Well (where, coincidentally, the talented-in-his-own-right Matt Woods has his day job). When I heard this was his last stop on a U.S. tour filled mostly with house shows and intimate venues, I knew I had to see him.

I have seen Lucas perform twice before: once with his back-up band The Bold Party in Shepherdstown, WV, and once while he was touring with Glossary as his back-up band when they opened for Lucero in Nashville. This time was different, though, because I got to see him by himself, and there is nothing I love more than seeing a musician perform with nothing but his guitar and his voice (and oh, what a truly incredible voice it is).

TVD Live: Stolen Silver at Schubas Tavern, 2/13

Last Monday, 2/13, your TVD-CHI editors once again headed into the city to check out this month’s residency at Schubas Tavern. For those of you who haven’t been following along, Schubas’ residency features new openers supporting a consistent headlining act every Monday night for a month.

This month’s band is Chicago’s incredible Stolen Silver, and week two brought them support from the talented Peter Mulvey.

Supporting their self-titled debut record, Dan Myers and Levi Britton have expanded their art folk duo to a full band that packs a musical punch with a wide variety of instrumentation on any given song.
