Weekend Shots!

Looking for some live music in Chicago this weekend? We’ve got you covered. Check out this weekend’s featured show along with a more extensive weekend list below!

THE SEA AND CAKE @ The Empty Bottle – 12/17

Chicago natives, The Sea and Cake, started playing music together in the mid-1990s. What began as indie rock with a jazz influence soon developed into a sound that relied on electronic sources like drum machines and synthesizers.

After a hiatus from 2004 to 2007, the band returned with their album, Everybody. Earlier this year, maintaining their distinctive post-jazz style, The Sea and Cake released their 10th and latest studio effort, The Moonlight Butterfly.

You can pick up most of The Sea and Cake’s discography on vinyl through Thrill Jockey’s website.

Phantom Limb usher
in 2012 with groovy modern Gospel album

Phantom Limb’s sophomore album “The Pines” will be released on February 13th. Former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford handles production duties on a record that effortlessly melds southern twang onto an Americana gospel sound.

The band have really come of age, eschewing the tentative feel of their eponymous 2008 debut and hitting cruise control with an assured batch of songs.

Here is the excellent video for the title track, which was issued this week:

TVD TV: Tycho at Summit Music Hall and Signed Vinyl Giveaway

IDM musician, blogger, and industry famous graphic design artist Scott Hansen was in Colorado for the first time performing as ambient electronic title Tycho. Backstage at Summit Music Hall, he met with The Vinyl District for this episode of TVD TV.

Hansen is deified nerd, an audio/visual authority/visionary with a palette for vintage analog. As ISO50, he also maintains one of the most popular design blogs on the web. Saturday at a packed Summit Music Hall, Tycho stepped onto a Denver stage for the first time.

Low-lit Summit Hall could be the setting for the kind of late ’80s cyberpunk b-film with teenage rollerblade gangs or celebrity hackers. (Actually, I think that’s a real film.) The crowd that filled the multiple levels of the hall that evening was an unusual solution of one part clean-cut graphic designers and one part psy trance festival hippies. The graphic designers looked better, but in the arena of scent the hippies had them overpowered.

Jakub Alexander, Tycho manager and A&R for Ghostly International, led us backstage and past some other band’s personal masseuse to find Hansen. After geeking out over each other’s cameras, Hansen and I sat down, and he gave me the details on his creative process, his instrumental idiosyncrasies and his journey as an independent artist.

TVD Live: Cricket Cemetary Showcase
at Galaxy Hut, 12/11

There are certainly merits to attending concerts in large theaters, or being one in 10,000 in the pulsating hum that is the crowd of a Bonnaroo or Lollapalooza. But sometimes, you need to be tightly packed into one small room to truly feel like you are experiencing a band and their art.

Such was the experience Sunday night at Galaxy Hut, as this small restaurant/bar held a second showcase of bands from the small DC label Cricket Cemetery. With the Maximum Capacity sign on the wall of the bar stating that no more than 66 people could fit in this venue, all tables and chairs had to be cleared out of the way so that there was plenty of standing room.

TVD Recommends:
Black Cobra at the
Black Cat, tonight!

Black Cobra is one of those bands that when you hear them play you think, “There are really only two members in this band?”

Formed in 2001, Black Cobra combines doom and sludge metal with a driving base in hardcore to create a sound that incorporates both fast riffs and slow drones. Signed to the record label Southern Lord, Black Cobra is in good company with bands like Grief, Wino and Sunn O))).

With the assistance of Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou and his Massachusetts studio, the band released their 4th album, Invernal, this year. Pummelling it down the throats of all that partake, the band has been touring across the country all year in promotion of the record.

Introducing: The Ghosts

The Ghosts formed almost a year ago to the day, when singer songwriter Alex Starling, formerly of Ou EstLe Swimming Pool, and drummer Ian Palmer were introduced by mutual friend, The Charlatans’ Jon Brookes.

Completed by Rayna Ferner (keyboards and strings), Dan Whiffin (guitar), and Alex Sharman (keyboards), The Ghosts cite a number of influences, ranging from 80s synth-pop to MGMT, Empire of The Sun, and even elements of The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys.

January 15th 2012 sees their debut release, Enough Time, from dream pop concoction that gives us a glimpse of what is to come from their debut album. This is pop music as it should be, balancing the hooks and melodic sensibility with a bittersweet undercurrent. Their debut album will follow next April.

The TVD Interview & Prize Pack Giveaway: Cheick Hamala Diabate with Empresarios and Sol Power at RnR, 12/16

He lives a life infused with humility. He’s a man of tradition, wise words, lives passed. He’s a musician, a poet, an entertainer. He’s a storyteller.

French-influenced West Africa calls him a griot [gree-oh]. Which denotes that his position as a storyteller in Malian society is a biologically-inherited, social obligation.

In Mali, Cheick Hamala Diabate tells me, you go to the griot when you are about to get married, have a baby, [seek advice] regarding your life direction, or when two people are fighting—“people trust the griot more than they trust the government,” says Diabate. “They say in Mali, when one griot dies, it’s like one library burned.”

Social media reveal schism in Jazz Fest booking priorities

Fans of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival used to have to wait until after Mardi Gras to get a glimpse at the acts that will grace the stages at the New Orleans Fairgrounds this Spring.

This year the list of bands came out earlier than ever. The full schedule is due in March. Here are my initial thoughts.

Almost immediately after the list of acts was released, social media sites lit up with comments and people started getting more  subscribers from themarketingheaven.com in order to promote their events online. What are they thinking—the Eagles (pictured above) at a jazz fest? I am so psyched they got the Eagles! The Foo Fighters? Who’s next Black Sabbath? Where’s the jazz at Jazz Fest? I am so pumped for Herbie Hancock!

What these comments, and hundreds more for profile optimization if you care to spend your time reading them, prove is a fundamental disconnect between two segments of fans of the annual event. Old timers, who remember the fest before it got all “corporate,” true jazz lovers and fans of niche styles bemoan changes that have actually been the status quo for years.

TVD Kickstarts: Exit Clov’s Brand Spankin New Record!

As we mentioned last week, we’re all about assisting the artists and bands who we believe in with their various and sundry Kickstarter endeavors, or as I’ve come to call them—the passing of the virtual hat.

So indeed, as their various appearances here at TVD over the years will attest, we believe in Exit Clov.

“TVD has so kindly lent us some real estate to plug Exit Clov’s current goings-on, which happens to include a brand new music video for The Hate!

We spent a weekend last year in a dark warehouse in DC. Between doughnut and bagel breaks, we spent some grueling hours taking pictures frame by frame to create the stop-motion style you see in the vid. A huge kudos to Joe Brener (who directed our MKultra video) and Matt Patton for their wacky creative vision, as well as the crew for their patience in wiring Susan up for the cloning scene. Have a look!
