TVD’s Eleven Weeks
of Vinyl Giveaways!
Week Four…

As we’ve pointed out over the past few weeks (rather broken record-like) one of the happy coincidences of being The Official Blog for Record Store Day 2011 is that we’re afforded the opportunity to underscore one of our main themes—namely that vinyl is a contemporary medium which is thriving and more vital than it has been in some time—DJ’s, purists, and collectors notwithstanding.

So, to that end, we’re spending the next eleven weeks straight putting records into the hands of TVD readers as we count down to April 16, 2011—Record Store Day. We’ll have a giveaway for you each and every Tuesday as well as sporadic surprises throughout the forthcoming weeks.

This week, we’ve got a reissue copy of Tom Waits’ 1976 LP, “Small Change” for your late night, alcohol-infused brooding.

Via allmusic, “The fourth release in Tom Waits’ series of skid row travelogues, Small Change proves to be the archetypal album of his ’70s work. A jazz trio comprising tenor sax player Lew Tabackin, bassist Jim Hughart, and drummer Shelly Manne, plus an occasional string section, back Waits and his piano on songs steeped in whiskey and atmosphere in which he alternately sings in his broken-beaned drunk’s voice (now deeper and overtly influenced by Louis Armstrong) and recites jazzy poetry.”

The rules can’t be any easier to enter our Eleven Weeks of Record Store Day Vinyl Giveaways: simply leave us a comment in the comments section to the contest letting us know why you deserve to win that particular LP. Be creative, funny, incisive—whatever it takes to grab our attention.

Winners of our Tuesday giveaways will be notified upon the launch of the next giveaway and must have a mailing address within the US and Canada.

Video: Wait. Think. Fast., ‘Hidden’

LA’s rock/Latin pop band Wait. Think. Fast. go back and forth from singing in Spanish to English while meshing guitars, synthesizers and piano. What’s great about the group is that they can take on a variety of sounds from the rock-driven “Covina Park” to the pop-fused “Si Es por Amor” to the misty intrigue of “Hidden.”

Filmed right outside the steps of their Echo Park home, here is their music video for “Hidden,” featuring the song’s lyrics. Purchase the album Lucas del Sur on iTunes.

Alex McMurray and Truth Universal to Talk about Culture and Money

The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Loyola University is presenting its first installment of the “People Say” Project. Doors open this evening at 5pm for a happy hour reception featuring complimentary beer from Abita, pizza from Slice, and cupcakes from Cupcake Fairies. The interview will begin at 6pm. The discussion is at the LEH’s office at 938 Lafayette Street in the CBD.

The event is designed to be conversation and is being moderated by Brian Boyles, the Program Director of the LEH.

I don’t know Truth, but I have known Alex since his college days in the late 1980s. His songwriting with groups like Royal Fingerbowl and Tin Men attest to his erudite take on the human condition. But what fans of his music may not know is that he his one of the funniest people in conversation with a quick wit. It should be an interesting evening to say the least.

Free Rock the Block On Elliston Place

It seems like it’s been awhile since there has been one of these festival-esque shows down on Elliston Place (or maybe I’ve been living under a rock which is more likely). In any case, tonight, Tuesday, February 22nd, The End and The Exit/In are hosting a free night of Nashville rock’n’roll. Please click the links below to sample some of the wares of these talented musicians. I know that listening to them definitely made me want to head over to Elliston Place tonight. My top pick at Exit/In is Evan P. Donahue. Top pick at The End would have to be Casa Castile. Support Live Music!

TVD Package Deal: Adieu Monsieur Tiersen

Staff Writer Leah Henry attends the “Yawn Tiersen” show.

“Incredible Musical Talent”
—Clash

“Ingeniously Catchy”
—Mojo

“Unconditionally Beautiful”
—Artrocker

Yann Tiersen may be everything proclaimed on his website’s homepage (see quotations from Clash, Mojo, Artrocker above), but at the stroke of midnight, Tuesday, February 15th at 815 V Street, he was not an unconditionally beautiful, ingenious musical talent. Tiersen clambered on stage buzzed and/or stoned, and most notably, late. Having been to late shows at the 9:30 Club before, I know that doors open at 10:00, the opener goes on just after 10:00, and the main act saunters into the limes around 11:00.

In my poor attendance of late weeknight shows, I’ve never seen a musician so heavily hyped (album Dust Lane two years in the making), with a background as rich (soundtracks, studio and live albums, with over fifteen years of musicianship) as Guillaume Yann Tiersen’s, keep the crowd waiting only to have rendered himself too polluted to blow into his melodica. After multiple attempts — I counted five botched blows, then threw my hands up in frustration — and empty apologies for giggling too violently to hold the tube in his mouth, he tossed the song intro behind him and began again. On his wikipedia page, they state that “His live performances vary greatly.” Well, I hope so, and I am 100% certain this is not the variety they had in mind.

Thoughts prior to the show: “Man, I am tired, but this is worth it. A French composer, with a post-punk influence, whose music is more often called “avant-garde” than anything else — this guy is going to be a diamond!”

All of that aside, I would like to thank Monsieur Tiersen for collaborating with Shannon Wright on an album. I felt privileged to have her on the DC leg of this tour. Unfortunately, not everyone in attendance felt the same good fortune. “Could you talk just a little less loudly!? That would be great! Thanks!” Wright’s shrill cry quieted the chatty, disrespectful Tuesday night crowd.

I commend her for carrying creepy, loud, indie-rock songs all on her own, “With Closed Eyes” (from 2004’s Over The Sun) being my immediate live favorite. Her frenzied performance style combines soft whispers with raging screams inspiring nostalgia for the indie-folk I find so familiar and the ”coolness” of punk I envy. Wright was an unexpected surprise on whom Tiersen did not capitalize.

THIS WEEK’S 360/TVD UK ALBUM PLAYLIST – 21.2.11

1. C.R. AVERY – So It Goes

This native of Vancouver, (home of so much great music these days) is impossible to define. Check his MySpace page, and you’ll see he describes himself as Blues/Classical/Hip Hop…can’t recommend the album highly enough, but if you don’t believe me, then Tom Waits described him as ‘Mindblowing’. Check this clip for a small flavour of what this fine artist is laying down:

2. BRIGHT EYES – The People’s Key

The last Conor Oberst missive under the Bright Eyes banner. Well, just as long as he continues to deliver literate, intelligent observations in this manner, there’s no need to be distressed. Check out the full album here:

3. JOHN VANDERSLICE – White Wilderness

Delicate and fractured, John Vanderslice’s music is for Sunday afternoons at home, in the post weekend haze. Guaranteed to wash over your soul, ‘Sea salt’ is the album’s opener, hear it here:

4. ALEXANDER – Alexander

Lead singer with Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros steps out with a solo album, ahead of his band’s forthcoming release and tour. Alexander played in London this past week, check out this rather shaky clip:

5. THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART – Belong

New York’s finest, or the band with the most pretentious name in Christendom? This JAMC influenced corker is the lead track on their new album, and hoists them several rungs up the current indie/pop hierarchical ladder.

6. WILLIAM FITZSIMMONS – Gold In The Shadow

Sufi beard, sandals and an acoustic guitar? Despite that heavy baggage, this guy pulls it off. This track, which kicks off his new album in understated fashion, is a real grower, and we’re predicting big things for this guy in 2011.

7. LEWIS FLOYD HENRY – One Man And His 30 Watt Pram

This one came out last October, but escaped our attention at the time. Fine record, with titles of the decade so far! To watch a clip of Henry performing ‘Rickety Ol’ Roller Coaster’ at last year’s ‘Secret Garden Party’, click here:

8. AMOS LEE – Mission Bell

‘Windows Are Rolled Down’, from Amos Lee’s latest, is a great John Hiattesque ballad. Not often we get to make such a comparison, but this guy lives up to such lofty comparisons and transcends the buzz on this album, which has class and quality stamped on it’s crystalline heart.

9. RON SEXSMITH – Long Player Late Bloomer

This guy has long deserved record sales way above what he achieves, but maybe that’s protected him from having to play the hideous games that have tainted many a career. This past week, Ron appeared on Nashville Public Radio, and performed this song ‘Get In Line’ from ‘Long Player Late Bloomer’. Check out that performance right here:

10. TEDDY THOMPSON – Bella

This track, ‘Looking For A Girl’ is from Teddy’s latest, and it’s a cracker. Witty and reflective at the same time, this live clip gives a good indication of the quality of material on Teddy’s current release:

Welcome, TVD
Asbury Park, NJ!

We welcome TVD Asbury Park to the TVD Network! We’re so proud and excited to bring you news from the home of Bruce Springsteen and location of the famous Stone Pony.

Asbury Park has the best of all worlds, as it’s located near the Jersey Shore and is only about an hour away from both New York City and Atlantic City. And we have to mention that it’s near TVD Jon’s childhood home, so it has a special place in our hearts (aww).

In the coming months, we’ll be one of the sponsors of the Power Pop-A-Licious music festival, which will be held Saturday, April 30th and Sunday, May 1st at Asbury Lanes.

In recent TVD news, we’d like to thank everyone who came out to The DC Record Fair at our newest location at Artisphere. We are also pleased to announce that TVD Portland will be joining the network on February 28th. If there isn’t one already, hopefully there will be a Vinyl District near you soon!

My First Record: J.D. Reager

I grew up around a huge record collection – mostly my father’s – and always had open access to the music library once I was old enough to properly operate the turntable, cassette deck, and (eventually) the CD player. So, while most of my friends were either listening to bad ’80s hair metal and/or R & B, I was obsessed with ’50s and ’60s rock and roll – which is what made of the bulk of my dad’s collection.

Some of my earliest heroes were The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Buddy Holly, Richie Valens (the movie LaBamba hit me hard) and The Herman’s Hermits. But above all others were The Monkees – my absolute favorites from ages 6 – 10 (roughly), THE reason I wanted to become a musician in the first place. I took up the drums first because I worshiped Mickey Dolenz.

(Brief aside – as something of a modern-day Mike Nesmith obsessive, I’m almost embarrassed to admit it all really started with Mickey for me. Ah, well.)

So anyway, I suppose this all brings me to my first record. The first one that was really and truly mine, that I bought with what I considered to be “my own money” was The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees. My mom took me to go record shopping at Pop Tunes on Summer Ave. one day sometime after the recent acquisition of birthday money. And there it was: a Rhino re-issue (which I still have) of a Monkees record that my dad didn’t already have. I recognized the song “Valerie” (probably the best of Davy Jones’ lead vocal songs) from the Greatest Hits album, and plowed forth in good faith.

TVD Austin Is Back!

Let’s try this again …

If you have been consistently following us, you may have noticed that this site has been stale over the past 10 days. Sorry about that. And for those of you that are visiting our little corner of the Interwebs for the first time, welcome!

Starting today, myself and Mark Fagan begin our new gigs as co-editors of TVD Austin. Mark and I have more years than we care to count between us working in record stores, playing in bands, and writing music blogs. Now that we are on board, we are excited to be a part of the The Vinyl District network, the official blog for Record Store Day! (Anyone else counting down the days until April 16th?)

Along with some other writers who have agreed to let us exploit their talents, we plan on covering not only vinyl (which we both love dearly) in Austin, but the music scene as a whole in this town. Whether it be what’s happening in the local record stores, writing album and concert reviews, featuring local bands, etc., you will find it here. The two of us are already hard at work in preparation for SXSW, which is still the best festival there is in my book. I will be posting details on our SXSW day party soon, so stay tuned!

We not only hope that you become a dedicated reader of our site, but also a contributor. We want to hear from you!

And we promise not to take 10 days off again!
