Introducing a new monthly feature here at TVD, the 9:30 Club Concert Calendar Preview! Every month, we’ll be previewing upcoming shows at 9:30 Club for that month, and we’ll have tickets giveaways following for each show.
It is, after all, Chinese New Year, and we just needed some kind of excuse to be generous. That, Dear Reader, sounds like a damn good deal for you.
Deerhoof brings their seductively dreamy, experimental rock to 9:30 Club on Monday! We were too impatient — we’ve already set up the ticket giveaway. Have you entered yet?
Polyvinyl just released Deerhoof vs. Evil on January 25th, and yes, it’s available in either pink (ooooh) or black vinyl. Their video for “Super Duper Rescue Heads!” debuted last month.
Gang of Four come over from across the pond, bringing their post-punk sensibilities in support of Content, their first album since 1995. Before you see them live, you can stream the entire new album.
Hint, hint: Our ticket giveaway for Gang of Four is coming up soon… On your marks… Get ready…
Tues 2/15 Yann Tiersen
Maybe you’ll still be all mushy-hearted from Valentines Day and in need of some classical instrumentation to share with your honey. Or, maybe you’ll need some soothing, arty, minimalist melodies to help you nurse your post-V’Day hangover (righttherewitcha). In either case, Yann Tiersen’s avant garde oeuvre is just right. And oui, he’s French, too! Bonus.
Wed 2/16 & Thurs 2/17 Slightly Stoopid
“Built on a bedrock of nasty, oceanic slabs of dubby bass, meditative vocal harmonies, rock-steady guitar licks and tightly syncopated percussive rhythms, Slightly Stoopid illustrate a case study in underground success…”
Oh, what an elegant way for their management to say, “music that makes you want to drop everything, move to Miami, and take hits out of a bong made from a Corona bottle.” Fight the winter blues with two nights of Slightly Stoopid because we all need to believe that Groundhog Phil is right.
Sat 2/26 Jonathan Richman
Whether you’ve been following eccentric cult hero Jonathan Richman since he was in The Modern Lovers or just know him from his cameo in There’s Something About Mary, you should know that “Jojo” has been associated with acts such as The Velvet Underground and The Sex Pistols and helped pave the way for modern punk music as we know it. This is your chance to see a legend.
Okay Dear Readers, we’ve done our part. Now it’s up to you. We would love to give you a big fat red envelope full of Chinese New Year money, but we’re kinda broke from stockpiling all those bottles away for Valentine’s Day, so a bunch of free tickets will have to do.
Keep reading during the rest of the month for your chance to win a pair of tickets to every show we’ve mentioned here. Happy Chinese New Year, Happy Early Valentine’s Day, Happy Belated Groundhog’s Day, and good luck to you all.
