The Single Girl:
Verse Metrics,
“Burn Twice As Bright”

Scotland’s musical output this last year has been phenomenal, and Verse Metrics is definitely up there as one of Glasgow’s most interesting bands of 2012. As the music press are beginning to herald the return for interesting guitar music, Verse Metrics couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

Taken from their recently released EP “Radians,” “Burn Twice As Bright” perfectly showcases Verse Metrics’ intricate sound. Reminiscent of American Football and the less languid moments of post-rock bands like Mogwai, they bring a fresh sound to the genre with vocals that lift them from straight post-rock to interesting guitar-led indie magic. Robert Dick’s vocals are more akin to bands like Editors, rather than what you’d usually expect from acts making this brand of music—that is, low whispers, groans, and softly spoken lyrics.

It’s refreshing to hear a band who are making interesting guitar music that crosses genres and would definitely appeal to fans of Explosions in the Sky, yet equally Interpol at the same time. Verse Metrics have arrived in time to save us from a wave of beige indie and folk that seems to have burst onto the scene in the last few years. We’re looking forward to Verse Metrics making 2013 a more interesting year for guitar music.
