Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from?
We are Vic and Gab, we are sisters currently living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Our music lingers in a mix of indie pop/rock with sweet harmonies, hooky bass and guitar lines.
I have been enjoying your track ‘I Haven’t Seen You’ for some time. Can you tell The Vinyl District the story behind it?
Vic and Gab – I Haven’t Seen You
I wrote this song with the idea of wasted love. How sometimes we have so much more left to give but due to circumstances, like distance, it can’t be. So you dwell on the past and start to panic when you can’t remember certain details. Like a person’s face or voice but you force yourself to remember. “I Haven’t Seen You” is about that panic.
Who has influenced your music the most?
I think the bands that we listened to when we were kids, like Rush, The Who, and The Police are really embedded in our heads. Especially with Rush, we were fascinated with their execution and their musicianship. It’s something we strive for.
What has been your standout band moment this year?
This year has been a break through year for us. One of the coolest things that happened to us this year was when our song “So Long So Tired” was featured on MTV’s Skins. We were ecstatic and it reassured us that we are on the right path. We also played Summerfest 2011 which is one of the biggest festivals in the world. That experience we will remember forever!
How did the MTV Skins thing happen?
Ourstage.com was holding a competition for songwriters and the prize was to be featured on Skins. We thought it was a good opportunity, so we uploaded our song. Our song won and the whole experience was unreal! We actually couldn’t believe it until we saw the episode on television.
Vic and Gab – So Long So Tired
What was the first piece of music you ever heard that really left a mark on you?
(Vic) When I listened to “Pinball Wizard” by The Who my first thought was, “I want to play guitar like that.” I was eleven and that was one of the first songs I learned on guitar.
(Gab) I still remember listening to ”The Pass” by Rush and falling in love with the sound of the bass and how it was such a prominent part of the song. As a bass player, listening to a song where the bass carries a lot of the melody was mesmerizing.
Name one thing no one knows about the band?
We are bilingual, we are Mexican-American and we were signed with Sony BMG Latin at some point. At the end we realized that we had swayed from what we initially wanted and decided to write in English and make our own way independently.
What are your hopes for 2012?
Next year we hope to play larger festivals, extend our fan base, release an album, and continue making music because there’s nothing else we rather do.
Finally, give me one sentence that sums up the band or your music.
Girls on a mission!
