Needle Drop: The Currys, “Water From The Well”

Wherein we embrace the singles scene. —Ed.

There are few songs that make the comforts of home seem as appealing as hitting the road or the club. The infallible “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young comes to mind as a perfect portrait of domestic bliss; a song written by Graham Nash while living with Joni Mitchell in her Laurel Canyon bungalow.

The Currys delicate approach to “Water from the Well,” the single from their extraordinary debut Follow, is a song with a similar sentiment. The three singers in the group (two brothers and one cousin) hit upon a vocal blend that indeed sits on par with the aforementioned super-group, while subtlety playing a harmonic dance with the nimble finger picked melody.

The song itself is recorded in lovely warm tones that complement the intimacy of the narrative. So if you find yourself around a crackling fire with your family or special someone, perhaps a glass of red wine in hand, you will have us to thank for enhancing that moment in time with this one.

The subject matter deals with two sweethearts who have decidedly cut themselves off from the world for a weekend. They are hauled up somewhere in the wilderness or perhaps a house a little ways out of town. It’s a place that allows the two modern lovers to wax nostalgic about the past, perhaps even the frontier times when getting water from the well was actually a necessity.

The protagonist in this story takes great pride in the task, knowing his woman will be fashioning him a home cooked meal upon his return and perhaps some after dinner delights to boot. What does become clear later in the song, after the narrator implies that turning the pictures on the wall around might afford them even more comfort, is that this might not be such a wholesome fling after all.
