Good music isn’t always all that far away. Tomorrow, Memphis garage-rock outfit The Near Reaches release their self-titled debut on vinyl and are kicking things off at The Cove with support from The Mighty Dead Soldiers.
Although The Near Reaches started as J.D. Reager’s (of The Cold Blooded Three) solo effort, music from the band’s other songwriters Jason Pulley (The Adversary) and Jack Alberson (Shortwave Dahlia) slowly began to sink into the project, transforming it from a solo outing into a full-on group.
With the addition of bassist Eric Wilson, you have The Near Reaches—an energetic garage rock quartet whose sound is comparable to alt-rock acts of the ’90s while maintaining a healthy grasp on an individual identity and modern songwriting.
This Saturday brings the release of their debut self-titled 4-song EP pressed on 7″ vinyl. The album was recorded at Young Ave sound, at the intersection of one of Memphis’ cultural hotspots of Cooper & Young. Recorded by Ari Morris, mixed by Morris and Ryan Proctor, mastered by Kevin Cubbins, and cut to vinyl by Jeff Powell (The Afghan Whigs, Stevie Ray Vaughn), the album has deep Memphis roots whose grooves can be heard throughout the record.
