Olivia Mancini & the Mates are joining us all week in celebration of the art and nuance of the cover song in advance of Friday night’s show (8/12) at the Black Cat.
TVD has YOU covered with two pairs of tickets to Friday’s show in exchange for your favorite cover in the comments to this post. We’ll choose our winners first thing on Friday morning. Ticket winners will ALSO receive a free copy of the band’s new 7-inch single, “For Ricky.”
“Blue Suede Shoes” by Carl Perkins (Sun Records single, 1956)
Odds are you know the cover version of this song better than you know the original. Most people associate Elvis with this tune but Carl Perkins wrote and recorded it for Sun Records about a year before Elvis released it on his first studio record, Elvis Presley.
Back in the day, it was pretty common for studios to have several singers record a single song to maximize profits or target different markets. This song probably helped the sale of Elvis’ record but Perkins’ original topped the charts while Elvis’ only made it to #20.
